This annoying message will appear on every screen until you register an account or log in. Membership is completely free, and we promise not to send you any spam.

The Cyburbia Forums is the oldest and most active English language urban planning message board on the Internet, and one of the small number of online communities where members enjoy intelligent, troll-free discussion. Cyburbia has hundreds of active members, yet is a strong community full of creative, friendly, and occasionally offbeat planners, planning students, architects, urbanists and other like-minded people who care about and/or help shape the built environment. Cyburbia Forums members enjoy a sense of community and camaraderie that is unmatched by any planning-related web site or listserv. We'd love to have you join us as another Cyburbian.

Comparing bikeway type colors

Mon, 2010/03/15 - 7:30am

Steven Vance has added a photo to the pool:

Comparing bikeway type colors

It appears that a solid green line is a bike lane.
A green line with black hash marks seems to be a marked-shared lane.
A bright green line is a multi-use trail.

Actually, according to the Official Google Blog, they mean:
-Dark green indicates a dedicated bike-only trail;
-Light green indicates a dedicated bike lane along a road;
-Dashed green indicates roads that are designated as preferred for bicycling, but without dedicated lanes

I don't think any city has a dedicated bike-only trail. They're all multi-use paths.

The bike lane on Roosevelt ends at Michigan Avenue.

Maps That Tell Tales: 15 Minutes at the Museum

Mon, 2010/03/15 - 7:30am

the_bumblebee has added a photo to the pool:

 15 Minutes at the Museum

Charted on the balcony of Worcester City Museum. This map shows just 15 minutes' worth of recorded movements on the Museum's 1st floor balcony [using chart points every 30 seconds]. Part of the balcony area is a cafe and there are temporary exhibitions of paintings on most walls.

My favourite micro observation is the youth who pops upstairs [not to broaden his horizons looking at art] but rather to use the Museums' toilet! Note too the elderly couple who were walking around the balcony looking at the paintings..

I recorded an hour's worth of movements in this location but after just 15 mins the charted movements make for a busy image with many different elements to try to visually describe.

UTC Geology Department

From the 'stereotypes are true' believers: all geology departments put rocks outside their buildings! Here, without a real sensible space for their rocks, the Geology Department at UT - Chattanooga lines the entry with them.
