Access management economic impact

I'm managing a streetscape project where we're coming up with design alternatives which include access management components. The corridor is a 1 mile retail/commercial arterial road with a few scattered houses. A major component of the concept plan will be improving traffic flow. This means limiting left turn movements with medians, removing retail curb cuts, consolidating access/egress points, and removing some traffic signals.

I foresee that retailers along the corridor will have concerns about the plan during our next public meeting. I'd like to present some case studies which will help them see the big picture. Even though we're reducing the number of access points and turning movements, overall, queues will be reduced and it will be less hair-raising for drivers to access their businesses. I'd like to show that the net economic impact of the project on retail businesses will be neutral or positive.

Can anyone refer me to case studies to this affect which I can include in the presentation?

Job prospects in Raleigh-Durham?

Does anyone know about the job prospects for planners in this region? Also, does anyone know about or have advice on internships for folks who already have degrees?

I posted some of this earlier under "Need Help," but basically I'm unemployable in the DC area. I graduated with a MURPL in Dec 2006 and have had 13 unsuccessful job interviews. Finally, a very helpful human resources worker explained that without experience, I was not even qualified for a planner technician job in his county. This position only requires an associates degree (but does require experience).

What's put me in a pickle is that I need to earn more than child care costs, because we're out of savings (extended unemployment does that). But in Raleigh, we can live on my wife's income while I work for free to get experience. I'm not stuck on this area, but it does seem to fit the bill for a lower cost of living while still offering job prospects, but I need to know the latter for sure. So if anyone knows if hiring freezes are coming or if it's a very bad area to get started, I could really use this information. For reasons that I haven't determined yet, Charlotte seems to have few jobs in planning right now. One other thing, there is a MURP program in Raleigh. If taking more classes would help, I can have that option (though schooling doesn't seem to be the answer). Any advice would be much appreciated.

Public sector director position. What can a person negotiate?

What additional terms should a person be asking for? i.e. contract, severence package, etc.

What is typical, what have you experienced?

Thanks!

Help - interview questions for assistant planner position

I'm going to have a 1/2 hour phone interview next week for my first planning job out of grad school. I'm really nervous about the questions they will ask me. I would like to have some answers prepared. The position is for an Assistant Planner position with an MPO. My specialization is in land use, but the job will require me to work in the transportation department. I have made the first cut so they are somewhat interested in me.

What are some sample interview questions that I could prepare for? I’m looking for more job specific question that they may ask.

MA in geography or planning tech job?

Hello Guys,

I have been working as a Planning Tech since January on a year's contract. I have since been accepted into a Geography MA program, which will deal with regional geography, land economics, statistics and population projections. I am also looking to squeeze in some planning history.

After I graduate, I am looking to work in urban development strategy, and feasibility studies.

I work in a small town and I have been here since my undergrad days. I am therefore looking to leave. I love the job. Should I tough it out for one more year?

I've read through some of the threads here, and I have a few specific questions.

I'm getting my master's in urban planning next week (yay! :) ) I attended the National Conference in Las Vegas last week, went to a few sessions, milled around a bit with people I know. I didn't really see a job listings that interested in me (they all looked West Coast, and I want to stay Southeast no matter what).

I have a resume put together, but no cover letter. I know I need to get on that cover letter.

1) I plan on sending them to a bunch of cities, counties, MPO's, etc even if they aren't listed anywhere as hiring. E-mail them or mail them hard copies?

2) This may be a bit early, but I read in other threads that recommend saying a range when asked about salary. How do I know what I am worth? I'm fresh out of college with a master's in planning, and had a 2-semester municipal internship (which I am bummed out about because I learned absolutely nothing except how to use the fancy copy machine and municode.com).

3) What is the difficulty level for rookies in the office? I have nightmares that I am going to be fired in 2 months, because I "don't know how to do anything they want me to". Maybe that is normal paranoia, but what really is expected of rookies. Do they start them out with very simple things, and work you into the office gradually?

That's basically it. I've mainly got the fear about being clueless as where to start when I get an assignment.

Thanks.

hi

I was wondering if anyone could post the rankings by planetizen here or email them to me?

omer.aijazi@utoronto.ca

I am interested in finding uout where Canadian schools such as UBC stand on these rankings. I have been hearing all sorts of things about the planning school at UBC!!

Also could someone explain to me how urban planning can be linked to international development?

thanks

oh and how is the planning program at UBC anyways? I have a business undergrad and have zero introduction with planning. I am looking for a broad program where I can bring in stuff like international development, public finance etc etc
