United Kingdom & Republic of Ireland - Guess the city thread

Right... its Friday i'm bored. Hows about a UK and Ireland guess the city thread?!

First one is a dead easy give away aimed at HarryFosset.

What is this foggy and very orange looking city / town?

    I know I know!

    *earnestly raises hand*

In order to make it a better game for others I'll throw in a couple of hints...

It stands on numerous rivers, of which one is the River Don.

Nikolaus Pevsner commented that it was "architecturally a miserable disappointment".

(A quick Google will solve the problem, but may not be in the spirit of the comp!)

I don't remember Doncaster looking like that... the floods did more than I realised OK - I know where it is, really, but I'll also give the other's a chance. How about another clue? It has two universities, both of which have the city name in their own.

Hmm, my first instinct was to say Edinburgh, because of the Bridge... but the architecture reminds me of the northern english cities... this is actually pretty hard.

I think finding that Church spire is the key.

Lightish building stone, gothic church, hilly, orwellian building to the left, pretty high rise. Hmm.

Edit: Gotcha Harry! Newcastle-upon-Tyne!? (My mum and dad would be ashamed of me for not knowing straight away).

I'd second the bid that it's Newcastle-upon-Tyne. I remember walking by that tall red brick building with a curved corner and going underneath a massively tall bridge when I was there a few summers ago.

Hmm perhaps it was a bit hard... its a holiday snap.

No the RoI number plate is a clue.
Another clue is the town gate is Norman.
It has no railway link, but does have a largish river flowing through it.

^I was In Glasgow a few years ago and that scene doesn't look familar. Some interesting post modern stuff there though. That said I have absolutely no idea where this is.
