St. Ann's Church Buffalo [Broadband Recommended]

This is a spectacular place that has to be seen to be believed. It is one of many like it making up a dense collection of spectacular religious buildings in Buffalo.

This one is scheduled to close.

Great photos! Its a shame it has to close but I can't blame the Diocese for doing what they have to do. If I'm not mistaken the school was the largest Catholic grade school in the country at one point.

Holy Place of Worship, Batman - that's one remarkable interior!

Any ideas about the place's fate? The outside looked a little gloomy, especially the boarded up windows, but the interior of the sanctuary (is that what you call it?) is really unbelievable.

The windows are not boarded. That is a heavy plastic that allows light through to the stained glass below. We have many similar churches (100-150 year old) in Detroit. The plastic helps provide a layer of insulation and security.

It was hard to tell from the photos. but it looked like this old building is sitting on a corner (at a one-way street, unfortunately). I suspect the primary street has good traffic, and visibility looks alright. The neighborhood appears to have some residential density. With any luck, you could have a Walgreens sitting here by this time next year.

St. Ann's used to be the dominant African-American Catholic congregation in Buffalo. It's sad to see such a beautiful building close. If Church of the Transfiguration is any indication of the fate of St. Ann's, I'm going to be shedding a few tears after the last service is held.

St Ann's Church

A dream has been realized: the church is being maintained as a shrine, and it's now part of the Buffalo Religious Arts Center. A relief ... and an inspiration! God bless these people!
