Star Trek - worth full price?

I am thinking of catching this movie tonight while the Dallas Mavericks are losing Game 4.
Anyone else seen it already? What's your recommendation - see it now, or wait for a matinee?

I consider myself a Trek devotee, and I liked the movie. It definitely changes the focus of the series, though. It's definitely more of a space action/drama that takes place in space (roughly) like Star Wars than the tech-heavy, socially progressive, politically-focused science fiction that most people will recognize and love/hate. Reason, of all places, offered a review that I agree with.

Yes.....

You should go see this movie as the Dallas Mavericks loose game 4.....as it should be......payback from my early years as a fan of the Denver Nuggets:

1987/88: After a disappointing season the Nuggets rebounded to capture the Midwest Division Title with a solid record of 54-28, finishing 1 game ahead of the Dallas Mavericks thanks to a season ending 10-game winning streak. In the playoffs the Nuggets momentum would slow, as they needed 5 games to get past the Seattle Supersonics. Their momentum would disappear completely as they are beaten by the high-powered Mavericks in 6 games.

I am hearing nothing but good things about the movie--from both hardcore dress-up trekkies and friends that have seen maybe one or two of the earlier Star Treks that are far from devoted.

Nemoy was on SNL Weekend Update Saturday night telling folks to go see it. That's all the endorsement I need.

Movies set in space are almost always better on the big screen. I think I'll be spending the bucks next weekend to go see it.

I saw it over the weekend. I'm definitely not a big Star Trek fan or Trekkie or whatever it's called. Nevertheless, I thought the movie was good -- though a bit cheesy. The presence of Nimoy in the film seemed nothing more than pandering to the old Star Trek crowd.

I saw it this past weekend (at matinee), but in hindsight it is certainly worth full price.

It was awesome and really worked with the history of the series.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
Nimoy, in my opinion, was not there simply to pander, but was a intrinsic part of the story that was told. He had to be there. If there was pandering (really not screwing with the formula), it was that this "reboot" didn't ignore all that came before, but as specifcally mentioned in the movie - the timeline was interrupted. The future is the past and the new future can be different without negating the past future. (It helps when time travel is possible in one's fictional future)

Forget the cinematography and writing. What I want to know is:

what percentage of the audience was dressed up a la Star Fleet?

I saw it and had a meh reaction. The actor who played Kirk overdid it, tho I liked the green girl through back to the original series. The reimagining of Spock was good and the actor did a good job with it. Uhura was hot!, tho the who love thing with Spock strained credibility. The actors who played Checkov and Sulu were miscast and did so-so their roles. Scotty was a hoot and the best part of the film. The villian was pretty good, tho the inside of the ship was too dark. McCoy was whinney without the old southern doctor charm from the orginal series.

My major critism was with Kirk. The actor overdid the role. Further, his behavior would have resulted in someone handing him his a#$, The whole hot headed, chip on his shoulder, rebel got annoying after a while. I have yet to see a military that would have responded, even lauded this behavior, let alone let him be a captain.

Over the top is Kirk's thing. Shatner was over the top, to the point of being almost a parody of himself. I used to laugh at him, then I realized it was really more of an acting choice. Prior to Star Trek Shatner showed he could act with sublety. Once he made his impact in the series, he sort of stayed with that over-the-top performance. Hey it worked. Why not stick with something that gets your work?

Kirk is not subtle. He is not cerebral. He is not reflective. He is a leader. He is arrogant. He struts. He pontificates. He is all up in your grill. That is his thing.

Pine does not want to do Shatner, but he has to be true to the character that Roddenberry and Shatner created.

But back to the question - I will probably wait until it goes to DVD.

I liked it and would say it is worth full price. It's definitely a movie theater movie, IMO. Saw one person dressed up leaving the theater as I walked in, but that was it - I saw it on Saturday, and I assume that the hardcore fans likely to dress up saw it on Thursday night.

I do. I'm just somewhere between a Trekkie and Trekker, that's all.
