Ideas for AICP CM credits
I mentioned this in another thread, and someone suggested it might be its own discussion.
What with everyone needing to get Certification Maintenance (CM) credits to keep their AICP designation, there has been a lot of discussion about it. Some people have said it has the appearance that the easiest way to get the credits you need is to attend APA national events, or otherwise purchase their educational services. This can be expensive given the tightening municipal budgets prevalent today and seems to some people as nothing more than more than a way for APA to make more money, essentially mandating that AICP members buy their stuff. Furthering this perception have been complaints from non-APA education providers about how expensive and time-consuming it is to have their services accredited for CM credits by APA. In the other thread, I mentioned that the regional level might be a good place to get CM credits. The attendees don't have to travel all the way to the National Conference. And the providers may be able to assemble enough of an audience to keep the cost reasonable. Some states might not have enough interest to justify their own conference or workshop, but grouped together, it might be more feasible on a CM credit per time-and-money investment ratio. What other thoughts do we have about how to get CM credits? How worried are you about getting the credits you need?

I am not really worried about getting my credits. I did attend the last National Conference and got a good start on my credits there however. I think that regional confrences are a great idea though. Spreading out the knowledge base beyond a state can really help. Sometimes you get kind of bored with what is going on in your own state and a regional conference can get rid of that boredom as new contacts are made. I know that Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky do a conference every two years, and I think that GA and FL are thinking about a joint conference as well.

Planetizen has on-line courses that offer CM credits. These are typically about $100 per course.

AICP has really stepped it up. There are now some 23.5 credits you can get on their website for free.
Last night I did a tuesdays course in a little more than an hour, and added an hour I needed.

Another option folks may not be aware of yet. I haven't used it, but it sounds like a good option if you live somewhere with lazy providers:
As we all know, one of the hassles of finding activities is that most of our 32 required credit hours need to be from events where the Provider has applied to APA to offer the event for CM credit. But, starting in July, the APA Web site now allows us to log hours for other events. To do this, you need to Log In to the APA CM Web site at: http://www.planning.org/cm/log/, then Navigate to the “My CM Log” page. Directly under the tally of how many hours you have, there is a box for “Add Self-Reported Credits”. Navigate to this page and you will see information on “Self-Reporting Basics” and “CM Criteria”. In short, “For every two-year CM reporting period, AICP members may self-report up to 8 credits from professional development activities that are not registered with APA by the provider….Members may submit events that occurred on or after April 14, 2007.”

Wisconsin APA chapter has done a great job providing short seminars that are free and are typically 1 credit. I am not sure they have done enought to get all of your CM credits but its a good way to knock off some of them.
I still predict that in the long-run people are just going to let their AICP go because of this CM requirement. If the planning community in general starts to think its not worth it, AICP won't have any bearing on whether someone gets a job or not. Most jobs don't require it anyway.

Rail~Volution 2009 in Boston, MA
Rail~Volution, a national conference focusing on the role of transit and land use in fostering sustainable, livable communities, has over 50 workshops and 16 mobile tours accredited for AICP CM credits.
Check out our brochure to see some of the panels, symposiums, speakers, workshops, and tours we've got planned. If the registration fee seems too steep, there's a scholarship program available. National scholarships have already been disbursed, but Local scholarships (meaning anyone from New England) are being accepted until 9/18 (the site says 9/11, but we extended the deadline). |

I received my letter from APA yesterday stating that I had 21 hours of the 32 required. When I looked over my credit log I found that I had logged just one or two sessions from some of the conferences I attended. I think this might have been in part because of problems with the log itself. Anyway, filling in the balance and reporting credits for other events I attended got me over the threshhold.
Does anyone else find the CM log difficult to use? I had to open two screens to be able to search for an event in one, and log the hours in the other.

I skipped the course and went straight to the quiz. ![]() I attended the PTS in Chicago this past June. I hate to say this, but it was a free trip out of the office, although it did cover the credits I needed to close out my 2 yr period. With the national conference here in New Orleans next year, I'll be covered for another 2 yrs. Despite these breaks, I do think that holding regional conferences is a good idea.

Reading this thread made me realize I hadn't updated my CM log in a while. Now that it's done, I'm good!
CM Log: Salmissra, AICP 32.00 Required 33.25 Earned 0.00 Needed 1.25 For Carry Over And I still have 2 months to go! I might be able to get in a couple Tuesdays at APA feeds over Thanksgiving, or perhaps something local if at a good time. Since I've been moved over to Real Estate (which is way better than being unemployed), I know I'm going to have to pay my dues this next round. Yuck. Plus, leaving the office to get credits won't be as easy.
