Info on comprehensive planning - Cyburbia Forums

Hi everyone.

I'm new here and this is my first thread. This is a very nice forum.

I am an architect(2004) and I am now studying to obtain a Master's degree in Urban Planning.

My supervisor asked me to prepare a seminar on comprehensive planning.

I have been searching the web for some days now, and still did not find anything detailed enough.

Actually, I found some nice threads in the Cyburbia forums regarding CP, but still need more detailing.

Can you please provide some info or web sites with free and detailed info on comprehensive planning?

That's a big topic. Start with the basics:

Once you get past that it gets a lot more complicated because different states/countries have different requirements.

You might want to check out your state's legislation on the subject. Some are very specific as to the required contents.

As Masswich stated this is a big subject.

Cardinal is right on the nose about checking with state statutes on comprehensive planning. Comp plans can be very area-specific. For example, Montana has guidlines about what must be in a growth policy (what we call a comprehensive plan).

Fortunately many cities and counties have their comp plans on line. Start with your own city or county. Different states have different requirements. What is great for the Midwest won't necessarily fly for the Interior West and vice versa.

I am currently updating my county's growth policy.

Good luck.

My advice: read growth policies early in the morning. An afternoon or evening read will likely be followed by an unscheduled nap
