I view the following types of music/"artists" as cultural pollution:

(C)rap: Hyperviolent, sexist, and repetititve
New Country. White trash and proud of it.
Pop - Anything played on pop stations these days
Boy Bands: "N Suck, Back Door Boys, New Kids on the Block, etc
Hannah Montana/Britney Spears/Hilary Duff etc-
Divas Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. Getting a fork stabbed in the eye is preferable to listening to this excrement.

Contemporary Christian: Amy Grant, yada yada yada. Generic, sanitized swill.

I try to be open-minded but... yeah, I'm with you on all of the above.

And "death metal" is akin to nails on a chalkboard.

I like finding strange foreign music. I like the idea that what sounds like a bizarre swirl of strings to me is the equivalient of a Phil Collins song to someone in India.

Like most people here I don't appreciate Chinese music. But I'm guessing that a country that large with that much history and ethnic diversity has a lot going on musically that we don't know about.

My worst music in the world list includes Top 40 auto-tune music and contemporary country - the kind sung by hunks in cowboy hats who brag about how "country" they are.

At least their musical tastes have improved slightly. Whoa, I'm having some kind of bad mental image of Gene Simmons, the cowboy...

I have to disagree. There have always been, and remain, many intelligent rap and hip-hop artists that are dedicated to social justice and equality. While many of them aren't quite mainstream, some have charted hits... probably most notably Digable Planets, Blackalicious, and Roots. I agree that much of mainstream rap is unnecessarily obsessed with thug machismo, but I don't think it's fair to defame an entire musical genre based on a few idiots.

Music is subjective. Dissing music that you don't like just makes you all seem like whiney old codgers.

Heh - I think I still have my old "DISCO SUCKS" button from that era.

Now I hear disco songs like "The Hustle" over the PA at our local grocery store. It doesn't have the same effect on me as it did in the late '70s, though...

I agree. I like so much music from so many different areas, I would never declare a specific genre as the worst.

I like music from N.W.A and Johny Cash to Miley Cyrus and Radiohead. I don't rule out entire genres of music.

Surely this will bring back memories of "Airplane!"

My choices for the worst

New Age Not only is it incredibly boring and therefore unsafe to listen to while driving, it also got huge blocks of airtime on countless public/community radio stations throughout the country at a time when all sorts of indie/alternative rock could not get on the air (i.e. before Nirvana made alternative mainstream). Bonus points for its cafeteria-like sampling of musical and religious traditions--often within the same track! Yet another thing to blame on the baby boomers.

"Acoustic" Seriously, try doing something other than singing along with one instrument all night--there's a world of possibilities out there. Also prevailed over alternative during the underground years on most noncommercial radio stations, thereby earning my ire.

As a side note, when I started working at the same place as a certain Moderator/heavy FAC poster that shall remain unnamed, our boss polled our music tastes to see if it would be possible to play music over his stereo for everyone in our 4 person office to listen to while working. The Mod replied "bagpipes," bringing the possibility of common office music to a screeching halt.

My vote is for all these emo bands from California with the ubiquitious whiny/depressed surfer-dude lead singer.

Anything by Kid Rock
Anything by NKOTB, Backstreet Boys, or their ilk
Hardcore gangsta rap that is just an attempt to be as "gangsta" as possible with no actual meaning behind it
Michael Bolton, Brian Adams, Richard Marx, et al.
Rap-reggae like Shaggy
"Divas" like Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, etc.
Most Nu-Metal and Emo crap they play these days
Pansy music on Apple commercials (Feist, etc.)
I've heard some pretty crappy local garage bands in my day, too (I'm talking ZERO talent)
Banal "spiritual" music...I might go to church more often if I didn't have to hear such bad music all the time
Most new country...most everything since Billy Ray Cyrus was popular has stunk

This Bear is not gonna totally slam any single music genre. However, I don't have much love for rap. Some of Eminem's songs were kinda cool, shoved into his movie. I like Kid Rock, probably more because he is a Great Lakes area fan and he blends smash-mouth rock with rap. (He also wears a Pittsburgh Steeler t-shirt, so that makes him "OK" in my bag. )

Not much of a fan of what I call "bland pop". Odd that I would say that, because I have always been a fan of musicals. That said, you are going to seek me out and punish me for this submission for "awful".....
