Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?
From Kelly's Heroes (1970)
Are you sure you're not hurt ?
No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.
From Electric Horseman (1979)
No favorites. In fact, I thought it was the weakest group of commercials to date. For once, the game was better than the commercials.
“Death comes when memories of the past exceed the vision for the future.”
Pretty disappointed. They were all pretty average. Doritos did a pretty good job... other than that they were all pretty bad.
A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools. -Douglas Adams
I did read an article over the weekend that looked at the growth (or non-growth) financial numbers for companies that advertise often on the Super Bowl. Generally, very weak performers. The article did indicate that there were "other economic influences" in the last 10 years. I do have to ask: "Does watching a funny Doritos commercial or a funny Chevy commercial make me want to run out and buy some/one?" No.

Clint Eastwood for President. That is all.
"It's halftime. Both teams are in their locker room discussing what they can do to win this game in the second half.
It's halftime in America, too. People are out of work and they're hurting. And they're all wondering what they're going to do to make a comeback. And we're all scared, because this isn't a game.
The people of Detroit know a little something about this. They almost lost everything. But we all pulled together, now Motor City is fighting again.
I've seen a lot of tough eras, a lot of downturns in my life. And, times when we didn't understand each other. It seems like we've lost our heart at times. When the fog of division, discord, and blame made it hard to see what lies ahead.
But after those trials, we all rallied around what was right, and acted as one. Because that's what we do. We find a way through tough times, and if we can't find a way, then we'll make one.
All that matters now is what's ahead. How do we come from behind? How do we come together? And, how do we win?
Detroit's showing us it can be done. And, what's true about them is true about all of us.
This country can't be knocked out with one punch. We get right back up again and when we do the world is going to hear the roar of our engines. Yeah, it's halftime America. And, our second half is about to begin.
Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell. -- Edward Abbey
People will miss that it once meant something to be Southern or Midwestern. It doesn't mean much now, except for the climate. The question, “Where are you from?” doesn't lead to anything odd or interesting. They live somewhere near a Gap store, and what else do you need to know? - Garrison Keillor
I admit, I thought it was an excellent commercial. But why Clint Eastwood? Remember ablarc and his thread about Clint Eastwood's home town? I don't remember Detroit being mentioned in that thread. "Made in Detroit... but Mayor of Carmel."
Mostly they were kind of meh. The two I really liked were the Clint Eastwood one and the VW Beetle ad with the overweight dog getting into shape.
"He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me?" Jeremiah 22:16
My reaction to the Chrysler Detroit commercial was that it said: "This is Detroit. We make cars. That's all we've ever done. That's all we'll ever do." Sad.
“Death comes when memories of the past exceed the vision for the future.”
I enjoyed the Hyundai Veloster Turbo commerical. The cheetah pitted against the car quickly gives up the chase, but finds a slower vixtim (the guy who just let it out of the cage). Comedic mauling ensues.
"I am very good at reading women, but I get into trouble for using the Braille method."
~ Otterpop ~
I thought the Chevy Silverado truck commercial sucked.
I liked the Veloster commercial and 2 Doritos (with the kid in the jumpy swing & dog that bribes the guy) commercials. I admit I thought about doing that with our little one when she was in the jumpy swing - kjel, don't do it!
"Whatever beer I'm drinking, is better than the one I'm not." DMLW
Not true
120 years ago we made stoves.
Many Pizza Chains have HQ's in the Detroit area including Little Caesers (who also own the Tiger, Wings, and a Casino) and Dominos. Smaller regional chains include Hungry Howies, Happy's and Papa Romanos.
Nex month we will open a factory making televisions. Mush of the tactile/flat screen technology was developed in Detroit.
Pretty pathetic... we need to diversify. Could never tell that the Detroit region has 5.5 million living in 2 countries!
We hope for better things; it will arise from the ashes - Fr Gabriel Richard 1805
I thought the M&Ms commercial was cute...also liked the half time show, Madonna was very entertaining and did anyone else catch that one-armed push up she did on stage?!?
"Never invest in any idea you can't illustrate with a crayon." ~Peter Lynch
I know it's not true but that's the perception outside of Detroit and that was the way I reacted to the ad. BTW, how many of those HQ's and factories are actually located in the City of Detroit? Including everything out to Ann Arbor (Domino's) doesn't make it Detroit.
“Death comes when memories of the past exceed the vision for the future.”
I thought the vampires/LED headlights commercial was pretty good. And the guy ogling the chick that turns out be a sedan ...![]()

Overall pretty lackluster year for ads, but I did like the Chrysler ad. It was a good commercial, sadly I think many people still think their cars suck. I also enjoyed the VW ad with the fat dog and the Doritos commercial with the dog.
Most of the analysis I saw today agreed this year was pretty bad for ads, which is a shame because NBC and Indy did a good job with the Super Bowl. Bear, one of the ad analysts I saw today was saying that the point of Super Bowl ads is more to build mindshare and most companies don't see an immediate uptick in sales unless it is an ad for a sale or something. $3.5 million seems like a lot to build mindshare, but at least they get to reuse the ads for the next 2 months.![]()
Detroit has always been a region when it comes to these issues. Ann Arbor, even though they like to think differently, is part of the Detroit region. There is little break in the urban area between Ann Arbor and Detroit. Nearly all of the main roadways (I-94, M-14, US-12, M-153) that connect the two are developed. The Detroit Airport is closer to the Center of AA than it is to the Center of Detroit! As far as HQ's and Factories there are still a number located in Detroit and more are moving in as the price of real estate has shrunk to a point where it makes good business sense to do so. This is not to say that there are a number outside of the City proper. The factories all work together as some make engines, stamp steel, make assorted parts, or do final assembly.
Cars assembled in the City proper include Jeeps, Chevys, Buicks, with Mercedes owning a diesel factory and Maserati coming soon. Ithin a mile of the border are Dodge Rams, Fords. This is what I can think of off the top of my head. There could be more. HQs include GM, Compuware, Quicken, Little Caesers. Within a mile of the border you can include Ford, Carhartt, and numerous others. I don't have time to count all of these.
I do not think in terms of lines on a map other than those that represent roads and rail. In that context the Detroit area certainly includes Windsor ON and its environs, Ann Arbor, and cases can be made to include Toledo, Flint, Monroe, and Port Huron.

What, the 2012 one? That was one of my favorites. The fact that Ford got all butt-hurt about it and wanted them to pull it made it even better. And I would never buy a Chevy.
I also liked the Fiat one until they showed the car (hah), and the Kia sandman one with the couple sleeping and having different dreams. That one could have been the talk of the day if they had just showed the guy going off with the Fabio-clone instead of his wife at the end![]()
I thought the Broderick/Bueller one was very clever. I also enjoyed the Eastwood ad, everything he reads is so dramatic.
