Parts of one heavily developed suburb of Buffalo, Amherst, are underlain by abandoned gypsum mines that aren't too far below the surface. The mines are supported by regularly spaced pillars. The mines have been abandoned since the 1970s, and are now flooded, threatening the structural integrity of the pillars.
