I was a Union member up until about 2 months ago when I got promoted to Acting Director. When they fill the Director position and I'm back to my former position I'll be back in the Union. Fine by me.
I've never been a union employee but I have worked in a union shop as a contract worker. My father was a member of the IBEW.

Back when I was a social worker for the State of Michigan, I was a member of the UAW. Besides them collecting some very minimal dues from me, I never had any interaction with them one way or another (I only worked there for about a year before I decided I would need to eat a bullet if I were going to continue with that career path).
Only a few departments under my current employer are unionized - my department is not one of them.

My first job was in a supermarket. All supermarket workers in the Buffalo area, except those at Wegmans, are unionized. I'm pro-union generally, but it seemed like overkill for a minimum wage job; it provided no benefits. In the 1980s, unions in the Buffalo area were under the thumb of the local mob, so I just assumed my paltry membership fees just ended up in their pockets.

Yep. Member of the UFCW for a few years. Took out a little over $7 a week for dues which was more than an hours wages. Still got paid near minimum like anywhere else so didn't see the point. Maybe full timers had it better, but they wouldn't make anyone full time even if they wanted it and I think they even demoted some people from full to part time.
I am a full, due paying member of SEIU (Service Employees International Union). I have the option to just carry "barging rate" which means i pay SIEU to bargain for me, but i cannot vote. My dues are a percentage of pay. The only reason i pay full freight is to vote, and quite frankly our union sucks. These idiots thought it would be a great idea to ask for an additional paid holiday in the midst of a budget deficit. Really? You fucking kidding me? This was 1 month into my new job.
Of course at a meeting i voice the stupidity of the idea. Met with some grumbles, but most employees at City Hall enjoyed what i had to say. Myself and another employee began a petition to break from these ass clowns to form our own bargaining unit for the "white-collar" city hall employees.
Well of course the union got wind of it.. and well.. buckled to the pressure to lay off the idiotic idea. I was asked to join the next bargaining session.
The union boss claims that we need to throw out whatever we wanted to start bargaining at the table. I basically said no one bargains like this anymore, we are not in the 1970's here and suggested that bargaining be done outside of City Hall over a series of lunches and a round of golf with the assistant City Manager. Let's just say the union goon doesn't like me but asked me to join for the next bargaining session.

I've never been in one. All of the places I've worked in my professional life, government employees have always been at-will employment. Before that, it restaurant trade in college, and grocery/convience store and helping my dad with his various side businesses.
However, I'm the grandson of two proud union members. Both of my grandfathers did ok by them.

I just talked to a couple people who are protesting construction work being done by non-union people... Turns out the protesters are non-union people, hired by the union to protest the hiring of not-union people....

Never been in a union and worked as a public-sector planner in four different states.
In college I worked part time at a hospital that was unionized. A contract was ratified shortly before the place closed down that said all part-time staff must be in the union. Occasionally I would get co-workers hassling me to join the union, but no union rep ever asked me to join the union. I am assuming that this is because I worked weekends and the reps all worked during the week. Those who would talk to me would tell me I would have bumping rights at another hospital. By this time it was evident that the hospital was going to be shut. What kind of bumping rights would I get if I was only in the union a few months and being part-time?
Thats been my only union experience. I guess that would make me a total scab, but hey I needed money to pay for college.

They do that out here too, with their big “Shame on So-and-So” banners. I was in SEIU under a previous employer and didn’t have any issues with them while I was there, they worked with the management so that furloughs (paid and unpaid) and other options were used instead of laying off anyone. In all fairness though, the management worked hard to move people around different departments so that no one was laid off, as well.
