Hilary Clinton seems to be leading in Iowa for the Dems. If Romney doesn't win in 2012 and is not a candidate in 2016, Huckabee is leading in Iowa in terms of favorability and is tied with Santorum for who Republicans in Iowa would like to see on the GOP ticket.

In Cleveland's days, it was often very difficult to get someone to agree to be nominated. People back then didn't necessarily clamor to become President like today.
Plus, it was a very different nominating process back then.
No chance in hell Obama is the Democratic nominee in 2016 if he loses.

It honestly makes no sense to send someone against an opponent they already lost to when there are stronger candidates in the party.

Nevertheless, 2016 is a long way away, and Hillary has to weigh whether she wants to put up with the transference of uppity Kenyan to Hitlery female and whatever else AM radio and SuperPACs vomit. I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't have done it in 2008 either, knowing what mess there was to clean up, so why do 2016 when the mess is still there?

I actually think Bill Clinton would be a far more likely choice. But I don't see that happening. For some strange reason, Prez/Congress seems to believe that prior experience sitting on a bench, working your way up through the various courts, is a prerequisite. Personally, I would like to have someone up there that has held a significant elected office just so they have a legislative perspective. I think it would help them to better understand the roles.

Bill Clinton almost got disbarred and agreed not to practice law for some period of time. Justice Kegan has no time on the bench but was a professor, clerked for some high profile justices and was solictor general but the last elected official to sit on the court was Sandra Day O'Connor who was once a state senator.
My rationale for President Obama ending up on the court in the future (I meant to say 15 plus years from now not within) because of his background, his age (just turned 51) and his experience with the law. I agree the court needs more diversity when it comes to experience.
As for the topic at hand I think the nominees for both parties in 2016 will have experience as a governor.

That does seem to be a growing trend with nominees (or at least competitive nominees)---transitioning from state executive branch to federal executive branch. You saw that come up A LOT this last primary season on the GOP side (Romney, Perry, Pawlenty, Huntsman), and the Republican Governors group has gained a lot of clout in recent years.

After seeing what happened to Buddy Roemer and Gary Johnson this year, I'm not even convinced being a governor is important. I'm almost willing to say the powers that be made sure those two would not receive the attention they should have.
Obama was the first president since Kennedy not to have been a governor before being elected. As John Kerry learned it is hard to run for President as a sitting Senator...you have to make too many procedural votes. Now with SuperPAC and unlimited anonymous corporate dollars they will be able to keep candidates defending their record instead of telling people what they will do once elected.
Since 2016 is so far off I think you will see a governor few are talking out make a strong run a la Clinton in 1992.
