    The 51st State

With the election results from Puerto Rico there is once again bound to be discussion about adding another star to the flag. But will it be Puerto Rico when it finally does happen? Or perhaps one of the other perennial contenders? Of course there is a poll.

I'd like to add Canada and Mexico to the United States. Our southern border would be much smaller and I don't think that there would be too many issues with trespassers along the northern one.

I think we made a big mistake after the Spanish American War when we had Cuba and gave it back. Cuba would have made a great state. Before Castro, my grandparents went to Cuba on business (sugar cane production) and pleasure, and they said it was a great place. Yes, of course, for the foreigners. The people under Batista didn't fare so well. Had we held onto it, things would have been a lot better for Cuba and probably us, as well.

So I would favor bringing them into the fold and making Puerto Rico and Cuba states. I prefer an even number of states, for the sake of an orderly flag.

There are some that want to make the Philippines a state. I think it is about 60 years too late for that but it would be kind of weird to have another ~90 million people in the country.

There will never be a 51st state. It would make flag designing too difficult. Instead no new state can come in until one of the existing ones leaves. There's a few I'd like to nominate.

We can just substitute 1 big star for each 5 little stars, much like Clube vs CluBe.

I don't think we will ever get a 51st state. How territories like PR are governed might change over time though.

Actually, there are a lot of states that would like to be split off from their current state. These are some that I can think of off the top of my head:
Upstate NY from NYC and environs
    Northern Cali from Southern
Western Nebraska from the eastern part
    Illinois from Chicago and environs
Usually these "movements" result from population shifts that give one part of a state a lot more power than other parts. It wasn't a big issue before one-man, one-vote rules took effect in the 1960s and 1970s but now that cows and deer can't get representation in the Nebraska or New York legislatures, some folks squawk.

There won't be any division of any state. There's way too much nationalism in places like the Philippines or Cuba for either to ever consider becoming a state. Maybe eventually Puerto Rico and the VI become a Carribbean state while Guam, American Samoa, and other Pacific territories become another Pacific one, but it's sure NOT going to be too soon.

Meh. Arid, overrun by Canadian tourists, and they drive on the wrong side of the road. Canada can have them.
