As some of you know, we have a nanny who watches the kids one day a week and works one on one with our oldest on a few class subjects. My wife and I agree that we should have the boys get her something for Christmas. But we have no idea what to get. We don’t want to give her a gift card or cash because it is so impersonally, but we are lost when it comes to getting her something that she would like.
What are your thoughts? What do you get non-family members?

Noodle splatter guards, whoopee cushions, season 1 of Gilligan's Island DVD collection. There are many different things to choose from. (or I suppose the gift certificate idea is not without merit either)

We gave our nanny a nice chunk of change. I figure that way she can buy whatever she wants over the year. We also bought a small card and made a gift from my kids.

We've always done gift cards to places like Targe. Most of our at home babysitters were college aged, so it was much appreciated by them.

Gift card or cash, especially if you don't know her well enough to know her likes/dislikes/interests. Get a nice greeting card though.

A gift card is always best for these situations, but if you want an actual present, then maybe food is one way to go. A box of See's Candies. A tin of imported cookies. A smoked salmon.

I agree that sometimes gift cards are just the way to go.
If you don't want to do that, how about a gift certificate to a local restaurant?
When I came into work this morning, a coworker had given me a nice scarf. That seems like it would be a good gift for a non-relative (or a relative). Who in the north wouldn't need a nice scarf (or wool hat or gloves)?

We broke down and bought the nanny a gift card to Barnes & Noble. Our oldest gave it to her this morning and she loved it. Apparently she has a list of books that she wants to buy.
