We have been waiting for this a long time. The Charlotte Light Rail line will be the first in the Carolinas.
Charlotte transit planners have approved the purchase of Charlotte's first light rail cars. The city will initially buy 16 cars for the South Corridor line. Each car costs about 3 and a quarter million dollars.
The total price comes in under the initial cost estimate. Cats officials also say the entire project is right on schedule. City council must now approve the purchase. The cars will be built in Sacramento, California. CATS expects the first one to be delivered in late 2005.
Siemens will be the contractor and has built trains for Houston, Los Angeles, Portland and San Diego. Canada's Bombardier and a Japanese firm were also in the bidding.
The Charlotte vehicles will be based on the same design as those used in Houston.
