    So many people logged on...

...makes me think of a suggestion.

It might be too difficult, but would a little java chat area be a bad idea? It might be fun to type "real time" now and again, eh?

    Nice Idea, but....

...most people are here during the work day...not exactly "chat" time.

Plus, lots of firewalls will not allow for that kind of java applet to function.

    Maybe...

I tend to log on in short bursts, rather than spend time in chat. The applets will work on our system, and I occassionally run through AIM to get in touch with friends, but can'tstay in protracted sessions. Don't know if I'd really use chat...

    This is already CyberCrack!

    I don't need/can't handle a more addictive real-time bong hit of Cyburbia!

Please someone get me to rehab NOW! I'm already shaking like Daryl Strawberry at a Urinalysis Appointment.

I thought about it, but then said "naaaah." Why?

    1) If it's busy here, the regular bulletin boards are pretty close to real time.

    2) Too much time chatting = less time posting.

    3) Chat really only works for IRC and for sites that have a LOT of users. The few times I've visited the Straight Dope channel on IRC, there would be 10, maybe 15 people tops on there. That's considering a board with thousands of registered users, where there's a new post every 30 to 120 seconds.
