Of the more than 40,000 projects funded through the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and Urban Parks Recreation and Recovery Program (UPARR), the 2004 21st Century American Heritage Places were selected because they met the following criteria:
Provide close-to-home, publicly accessible recreation that encourages smart growth;
Demonstrate funding partnerships among federal, state, local, and private entities;
Shed light on the unique cultural, natural, and historical heritage of America's parks;
Offer a diversity of conservation and recreational opportunities; and
Meet specific recreational and physical activity needs to nearby communities.

Sandy Beach Park — Macon, Georgia
Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve — New Orleans, Louisiana

Northwestern Community Center — Dayton, Ohio
Okehocking Preserve — Willistown Township, Pennsylvania
Radnor Lake State Natural Area — Davidson County, Tennessee
Blackwater Falls State Park — Tucker County, West Virginia
Big Dry Creek Trail — Metropolitan Denver, Colorado
