I actually interviewed in a town near there....one of the town board members asked me how would I manage a file system.....
It would certainly would make me a little wary. However, it could just be that there is a new administration in that decided to do some house cleaning.
I once interviewed for a town near there as well, and couldn't get a straight answer from the town officials afterwards regarding the status of their search.
I had the joy of reading about their hiring decision in the morning paper.....

My understanding is that Mark Eldridge, the Department Director is retiring, there's been an internal shift of people to positions, and what's been posted is the result of the internal position shifts and some small reorganizing of the department.

Burlington would be an awesome place to live. Great summers, great winters (if you like to ski). Really neat downtown. One of the cycling magazines rated it as a top 10 place to live.
About 2 hours to montreal and 4 hours to boston.
If I had not just moved and still recovering($$) from the move I'd consider applying.

It would be a nasty paycut, and I'm not sure I could do winter anymore, let alone WINTER (I've heard the winds howling off Lake Chapaign are...amazing), but I loved Burlington when I visited a few years ago...in summer
It would be a nasty pay cut for me as well... but Burlington Vermont is a great place,,,reminds me of my hometown of Ithaca, NY. Champlain is beautiful... and the views of the Adirondacks...my boat would be right at home. But,, housing is expensive....but I am sure traffic is not as bad as I have right now.

Using the Sr planner wages, it equals almost $40K a year. Using a salary convertor and assuming you'd want to own here are the numbers I got.
For the bay area it is "equivalent" to just over 87k
For where you live you need to make $65k for the same standard of living.
For me it would also technically be a drop in my pay. (Using London as my base point - $32k).
Not sure how salary convertors really work as there are items that are expensive no matter where you live. For me a new bike tire is the same price regardless if I earn $1 million dollars or $20k so I don't know how those items factor in.

Is this for the directorship? Because that is not very much for that position in most American cities... even for those in the "rust belt" with lower housing cost.
Then again, I've never been to Vermont, so perhaps that is normal for the area.

Burlington is not looking for a new director....they promoted from within. They're looking for a senior planner and an associate planner.

Vermont does pay really low in general.. and the housing is not cheap. You gotta really want to live there and put a high value on the quality of life.
They have all three still posted on their own website...must have to meet some civil service guidelines.

Hmmm.....their HR guy only sent me the Senior and Associate Planner (and a department secretary) to post on NNECAPA......I'll have to put a bug in the ear of a particular planner from Burlington that happens to be the NNECAPA prez.....

I see the director job is also listed at the APA website....
Used a different calculator (via Google), and we are looking at a 25% drop in "equivalent" pay to move to Burlington. Still, how realistic are these calculators?-that's a good question.
