Census Question

This is a pretty arcane question, so ...hopefully the numbers crunchers out there can give some advice on this topic:

We are trying to determine the average household size (2000) for multifamily housing units versus single family housing units. Something one would think the Census would cover in American Factfinder, right? I cannot find it! I could do convoluted average calculation based on Summary File SF 4 and Table HT 19. Am I missing something? Is there some magic table that contains average household size for single family structures versus multifamily structures? There is certainly date for household size by tenure, but.... HELP!

Before you try to do the numbers yourself, have you checked with your regional or state census data centers? They may have that figure for your community calculated already.

Also, check with any regional university that has any type of demographic research center.

Its a GREAT suggestion - school census are required annually by law around these parts.

Did my info help? I've used that info before for other projetcs. The good thing about it is that it comes from the 100% data.

Use HCT5 - AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD SIZE OF OCCUPIED HOUSING UNITS BY TENURE - from the SF 2 file.

That table gives the figure by owner occupied or renter occupied, not by type of residential structure.

The US Census will do the research for you, looking at the type of structure lived in, number of bedrooms, household size and create a file for you:
This is called a request for Special Tabulation. Try to tie your request to some needed information by a Federal Agency of some kind and they may not charge you the $1,000 plus to do the work.....(Need the numbers to meet HUD grant requirements, or US Dept. of Education family data for schools....and so on....)

HCT 5 defines it by "renters" and "owners" not by single family housing units versus multifamily housing units.

I actually ended up using SP4-HCT 19 and fudging a bit to calculate the average I need.
