Work shirts.

Specifically holes at the elbow.

I need help on care and upkeep of my work shirts.

I started ironing my shirt this morning and I discovered a hole at the elbow of the right arm. I am right-handed so this makes sense. So, I said the heck with that shirt, and started to iron another one. UGH! This one had a hole too, but much bigger! I tossed that one aside and found one that was intact. Whew!

The holes are created by being a slave at my desk and mousing all the time. How can I prevent this? I don't want to wear junk like this:



I could sew the holes, but then the shirts will look bad. The hole will come back, I know it. I can buy new shirts, but that costs too much money. I just want to make sure any new shirts that I do buy last a little longer. What do you suggest? And I don't like to wear short-sleeves. I know that's a wise solution, but c'mon, I'm in Michigan! We have summer for only five months, if we are lucky!

That is what leather elbow patches on jackets are for. You can salvage the remaining shirts by having them cut down to short sleeves, if you are willing. My mom is a seamstress. She used to do that with my dad's shirts.

That's a great idea! In lieu of having a seamstress relative, what sort of professional these days does that sleeve-hacking thing you mentioned? The dry cleaners? A tailor?

A good dry cleaner might have alteration services available. If not, a tailor can do it in a pinch.

a tailor could definitely do it. but it might be cheaper to just buy a short sleeve shirt.

Thanks, but my tastes are clear on the issue of sleeves: no short sleeves. No offense, but I think short sleeves with dress pants and a tie looks dorky. My engineering co-workers do this, and I must confess, it's not for me.

I wear short sleeve shirts to work but never a tie.

When I was a kid I would wear holes the knees of my jeans while playing ourside and this would make my mom mad. SO what she did was when I would get new jeans, she would turn them inside out and put those iron-on patches on them. This would reinforce then and make them last a little longer.

SO I suggest you buy some new shirts, or take the shirts which don't have big holes in them and turn them inside out and iron on patched in the problem area.

Agreed; many of the guys around here wear short sleeved shirts with ties...not my style.
