Another City-County merger in the works?

I saw an editorial in our local paper a few weeks ago (it ran during a roadtrip that I was taking at the time and its link expired before I got home and was able to read it) alluding to a proposed merger of the governments of the City of Des Moines and Polk County, Iowa. Digging around, I found a page about it on the Des moines Register website http://DesMoinesRegister.com/extras/merger/index.html but the links on that page are over a year old. There is nothing about it on either the City of Des Moines or Polk County websites.

Following on the heels of the apparently wildly successful recent Louisville-Jefferson County (Kentucky) merger, what is the latest on this proposal in Iowa?

They are still working on it. It is a major PITA withs fights in most departments. It is to be on the ballet in November, so look for more news as that gets closer.

No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.

    Not so r.e. Louisville

I've heard differently regarding Louisville. I'm writing from Albuquerque, where last fall we defeated an attempt to merge the city with Bernalillo County. During the campaign we brought in Hank Savitch, based in Louisville, who had much to say about the Louisville merger, and it wasn't very nice. I'd contact him for a more balanced perspective than the chamber booster talk that tends to get passed around as fact.

Update on Albuquerque: the unification question will be put before voters yet again this November. So far, the polls are still showing it will be defeated. We will see...

What's wrong with city-county consolidation? Its seems to worked very well for Jacksonville, Nashville, & Indianapolis.
