Thank you - I think I was simply feeling overly goofy that week - knowing I about to start a week long vacation in San Diego - oops, I meant an informative convention in San Diego.

Isn't Coffeyville Kansas where Jesse James and his gang were from? or at least robbed a bank their.....Didn't one of the brothers die there? Only reason I'm interested is that Jesse James was killed in Creede Colorado.....and I watch too many old westerns....

I hate quoting myself, but I'm doing it anyway.

I've managed Hawaii, and next month with be going to Alaska. So... I can cross it off the bucket list with a trip to lovely North Dakota!

This will also make make me either 4 or 5 short of hitting all the Canadian provinces (if I visit the Yukon this trip). I have a feeling I won't manage the NW Territories or Nunavut.

I can now cross off Minnesota, California, Nevada and Arizona off the list. Since National is having a conference in Seattle, I hope to cross Washington off my list. After reading the Longmire books, I wouldn't mide being seeing Wyoming.
Really we should do a follow up list of states we've been to, but don't care to go back to.

States I still need to visit:

    Alaska
    Montana
    Wyoming
    North Dakota
    South Dakota
    Oklahoma
    Nebraska
    Kansas

Really the only reason I haven't visited these states is because I haven't had a reason to visit. Hubby and I were supposed to do a Great Plains roadtrip this summer but that got postponed due to family plans.

I've only been to 18 states + DC, so I still have my work cut out for me.

The 32 states I haven't visited yet are AK, HI, WA, OR, CA, NV, ID, MT, WY, UT, AZ, NM, ND, SD, KS, OK, TX, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, WV, DE, NJ, NY, CT, RI, MA, VT, NH, and ME.

Why haven't I visited the other 32? Mainly because I'm only 26, I'm not that wealthy, my parents never were either, and I seem to have the habit of visiting the same places many times. I love traveling though, and have learned to be pretty budget-conscious on vacations, so hopefully I'll get to a lot more states sooner rather than later. I hope to get to every state before I die, but there are certainly states that I would say are low-priority.

    Low-priority states include:
North Dakota - seems pretty boring, more of a pass-through state; also it seems like it's always cold here
Delaware - I think Wayne's World summed up this state best..."Imagine being magically whisked away to...Delaware. Hi...I'm in...Delaware."
West Virginia - Mines and hillbillies don't have much interest to me. Yeah, there are the Appalachians, but I guess I'd rather see them from VA or NC or TN...all more interesting states.
Mississippi - The blues scene interests me, Natchez and Vicksburg have a lot of history, and the coast might be fun to visit...but I feel I've already gotten a taste of the blues in Memphis and I'd much rather experience the Gulf Coast from Florida again and again.
Alabama - Again, the beaches and Mobile might be fun to explore, maybe get a taste of the civil rights in Birmingham or Montgomery, but I feel there's just as much civil rights stuff in Georgia (which I understand is prettier, classier, and has more going on), and again, I'd rather go to Florida again for the Gulf Coast experience.

I really need to make many trips out west (I definitely want to hit all those states), gotta do Texas and the southern plains, and gotta check out New Orleans, SC & GA, and explore the greater New York area.

New England is kinda low-priority for me too, with the exception of MA & ME. However, I feel I could knock out all those states anyways with one 10-day trip or something.

    The "haven't been there' list:
    • New England: Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island. Fairly close, but I never had a reason to go there. Some long weekend, I might do a long drive that takes me through all of them.
    • Wisconsin: Even though I spent a lot of time in Chicago, I never took the hour drive to the north to claim another state. Don't know why.
    • North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho: none of my road trips ever took me through there. They weren't between me and my final destination, nor were they my destination. I also don't own a motorcycle, which seems like a prerequisite to visiting the northern Great Plains.
    • Alaska and Hawaii: can't afford it.

Our beaches are better than Florida's. The sand is just as white and the water is just as warm, but it's generally cheaper and less crowded. Not that our beaches are desolate or empty; plenty of people go there, but it's not crazy like it is in Panama City or Fort Walton Beach further down the coast. We've definitely got the best Gulf Coast beaches.

The states that I haven't been to include:

    Washington
    Oregon
    Alaska
    Hawai'i
    California
    Montana
    Arizona
    New Mexico
    Colorado
    North and South Dakota
    Kansas
    Oklahoma
Wisconsin (only drove through, never stopped)
Iowa (only drove through, never stopped)
    Michigan
    Indiana
West Virginia (only drove through, never stopped)
Delaware (if you count stopping at that huge rest stop on 95)
The New England States, except for Connecticut

So that's about half of the states. Again, like illinoisplanner I'm in my 20s and grew up middle-class at best, so I certainly have never had the time or the money to travel the world or climb Machu Pichu like some other 20 somethings whose parents are obviously loaded. But I may be taking a trip somewhere soon, since the opportunity is presenting itself.........

That's odd, because I grew up borderline poor but we took family trips to Texas and Virginia. We also went to Michigan and Wisconsin on a regular basis. Granted, we worked liked dogs the rest of year, but we still had the time/money for vacations.

Like I said, I wouldn't say we were poor by a long shot, but we did make road trips to the East Coast and the Midwest a few times as a kid. And we went to Florida once. But sometimes I meet people in their 20s who've already traveled to like 30 different countries and 5 or 6 continents, and I'm like, how did you have the time or money for that? I worked 30-40 hours a week in undergrad and worked throughout grad school, including one semester where I juggled two jobs as a full-time student.

Well in that case, does New Mexico count? True story - my flight stopped in Albuquerque once because a guy sitting on the plane right in front of me had a stroke and we had to make an emergency landing there. I was on my way to APA nationals in Las Vegas, as a matter of fact.

There are many states I have never been to. I have never been in the South with the exception of North Carolina and Georgia, but I'm moving to Atlanta and will visit all of the states in that region. Here are the states I have no interest in visiting:

Alaska -- I'm not a nature lover, and it's really out of the way for me

Wyoming -- I heard there is nothing there. Maybe if you like nature, but I do not

New Mexico -- Just seems irrelevant

    Montana -- Ditto New Mexico

Nevada -- I have been to Las Vegas, actually. I ask the Higher Power of my choice to annul my visit there, and pretend I have not been there. I have no interest in returning.

Rhode Island -- A state where people judge their social status based on license plates is bound to be quirky.

I have never been to any states in Tornado Alley, but that is a goal of mine. Tornados fascinate me. In fact, I want to go on one of those two week tours with a storm chaser, where we just chase tornados across the plains.

Never been anywhere south of Arlington, VA.

Never been anywhere west of Chicago with the exception of Portland, OR.

In summary I've never been to any of the "red" states. (Indiana comes the closest)

True, I wouldn't mind visiting...just not sure any reason to do so unless I specifically planned on going to Arkansas.

Indiana is about as red as you can get. The only redder states would be Utah, Kanses, Texas and South Carolina.

I don't know....I think Oklahoma is the reddest state. Every county has gone Republican for the last 3 presidential elections. I think only Utah matches that.

Remember that northwest Indiana is pretty blue, and Marion County/Indianapolis has become pretty moderate. It was enough to give Obama the state in 2008.

Okla is pretty red, but the vote for for the D was pretty much an abnormality. The first in 40+ years. They swung pretty hard right since then. If Lugar has won the primary, they would still have 2 Republican senators. NW Indiana is part of Indiana only because of geography.
