He provided some of the best Funk music ever. "Superfreak" will always be a classic!

    Superfreak:

    She's a very kinky girl
The kind you don't take home to mother
She will never let your spirits down
Once you get her off the street, ow girl

She likes the boys in the band
She says that I'm her all-time favorite
When I make my move to her room it's the right time
    She's never hard to please

    {Refrain}
That girl is pretty wild now
    The girl's a super freak
The kind of girl you read about
    In new-wave magazine
    That girl is pretty kinky
    The girl's a super freak
I really love to taste her
    Every time we meet
She's all right, she's all right
That girl's all right with me, yeah
She's a super freak, super freak
    She's super-freaky, yow

    Super freak, super freak

    She's a very special girl
The kind of girl you want to know
From her head down to her toenails
    Down to her feet, yeah
And she'll wait for me at backstage with her girlfriends
    In a limousine
    Going back in Chinatown

Three's not a crowd to her, she says
    "Room 714, I'll be waiting"
When I get there she's got incense, wine and candles
    It's such a freaky scene

    {Refrain}

    {Bridge}

    Temptations sing!
    Ohhhhh
    Super freak, super freak
    That girl's a super freak
    Ohhhhh

    She's a very kinky girl
The kind you don't take home to mother
She will never let your spirits down
Once you get her off the street, ow girl

    Blow, Danny!

    With all respect, R.I.P. Superfreak.

I've been listening to his Anthology for the past few days just out of pure entertainment and enjoyment. Talk about some kind of super freaky foreshadowing.

    He had a connection -

founding his first group in Toronto, the Mynah Birds, which included members Neil Young, Bruce Palmer (who later formed Buffalo Springfield) and Goldie McJohn (who later joined Steppenwolf). The group signed to Motown in the mid-1960s and recorded a few tracks, though none were ever released.

    According to MTV News

Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?
    From Kelly's Heroes (1970)

Are you sure you're not hurt ?
No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.

This really bummed me out when I heard about it. I have really been into funk all my life, and Rick was the start of it all in the mid to late 70s.

Rick James was a great contributor to funk and R&B. His music kept me goin' at college parties in the '80s, and he will be missed. But no one else fits the "live fast, die young" description better than him.

His story was the first I ever saw on VH1's "Behind the Music" some 7-8 years ago. It won't be long before others from his era start dropping, too.

Dan, Rumpy and other Buffalonians -- did you know Rick James was from your fair city?

That was the first thing that popped into my head when I read this thread. Memories of skating at Holland's Roll-O-Rama on a saturday evening with the dj spinning Superfreak over the sound system.

A little something I learned last night from a woman who partied with him back in the day... The superfreak that you don't bring home to mother is actress Linda Blair whom RJ had a brief affair with.

I was thinking of asking yesterday if the song referred to her.

Actually, Rick James wrote "Coldblooded" for Linda Blair. Not only did he say that on his Behind the Music episode, it's in the liner notes of his Anthology.

Off the top of my head, I cannot recall that song. Darn. But thanks. All I really know about the affair is that she was asked in some interview who her "dream date" (or some such) would be and she said "Rick James". He heard it or read it and called her not too long thereafter. They then hooked up for a time.
