When is a pig a pet, and other assorted animals?

We're a predominantly rural municipality with a number of small towns, villages and hamlets way up here in Ontario, Canada (about 2 hrs north of Toronto).

We are in the midst of drafting a new zoning by-law and we're wondering if the issue of pets should be addressed in the zoning by-law or if it should leave pets well enough and have some other by-law address pets.

Has anyone else drafted a zoning by-law to include definitions of pets and even gone so far as to regulate where certain pets are permitted?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Animals of a farm like nature are "farm animals" and need 10 acres. Goats are not "Pets" and need 10 acres, Horses need two acres for the 1st, and one for each horse after that.

Large cats (tigers and lions) are not permited by state regulations.

Pigs, horses, goats etc would be a farm animal to us and would need a minimum of 4 acres. We also have a limit on the number of animals per acre depending on the type.

A pig is a pet the moment the kids give it a name and it sleeps in the house. Otherwise it is just bacon with self-mobility.

    Off-topic:

I college gal I knew grew up on a farm and invited a group of us over to the farm for a big old sit down meal. Half way through dinner we found out we were eating "Max". For a brief minute, I ws just hoping Max was not an uncle...

Carly Simon gave her (now) ex-husband a pig for a pet. el Guapo's post reminded me and these are the lyrics.

life's good friends are hard to find
and now one of mine is dead
and things I should have said to her
i shall say to you instead

    mona mona
so much of you to love
too much of you to take care of
    mona mona
you got too big to keep
and too damn old to eat

when you where just a football
    at your mama's side
    i reckon everyone figured you
for a bar-b-que when you died
and here I'm thinking about you
    lying underground
pushing up a pine tree in my field

    oh mona mona
    you can close your eyes
I've got a twelve gauge surprise
    waiting for you

since the day she passed away
    everything's just the same
    everywhere I go
    somebody mentions her name
    sometimes it's easiest to tell
    a friend a lie
    they don't understand
    the way I feel

    oh mona mona
so much of you to love
too much of you to take care of
    so long

now she is gone and I am
left alone as you can see
but ever since I caused her death
    i do miss her company
