    Halloween! It's a RACIST holiday!

    Only in Florida.

Halloween display seen as symbol of hate

It had the face of Frankenstein and the hands of a werewolf.

Outfitted in jeans and flannel shirt, the creature - stuffed with crumpled newspaper - hung by the neck on a homemade gallows outside a home in the Allendale neighborhood.

To its owner, "Bob" was a Halloween decoration. But to Omali Yeshítela, it was a racially charged symbol of hate.

On Tuesday, as police officers on the scene scrambled to contact the homeowner at work, Yeshítela and others from the International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement tore the dummy down.

"There is no history of hanging ghouls in this country but there is a history of hanging African people," said Yeshítela, leader of the St. Petersburg-based group.

    Sigh.

Well I think I mentioned this in another thread but here, while we do "celebrate"* Halloween, we have a bunch of Concerned Parents groups whinning and bitching to force kids into wearing non violent or spooky costumes (i.e. you'll see a 6 yr old kid forced to use a flower costume)

Sigh... Not only we import traditions; but also we have to screw them up....

    * The one's celebrating it of course are: Kids and Candy stores and producers and Dentists...

Same thing here! It was a big story on the NATIONAL CBC news broadcast last night. One parent group is even suggesting that Halloween be celebrated only on the last Saturday in October, and not actually on the 31st. It all seems so silly. If you don't agree with it, then don't send your kids out on Sunday and turn off your lights... why make it into a big issue?

On the topic of the particular case that Dan mentioned, from my own history, the entryway to the house I grew up in had a courtyard where we used to do lots of spooky stuff. One of the 'decorations' was someone hanging by the neck from the trellis above the courtyard. It wasn't the ONLY decoration though, we had skeletons, witches, giant spiders, etc. We did it year after year, with no complaints (that we know of). We lived in a diverse neighbourhood in L.A. at the time, and as far as I know none of our neighbours had a problem with it, and a lot of people went out of their way to come down to our house because of the spooky haunted-house-like atmosphere.

People celebrate the sabbath every Sunday. You don't here me throwing a fit about their celebration (other than you can't buy beer until noon on Sundays in NYS ).

I forgot, for some, Sunday is the mark of the Beast (according to a billboard in Kentucky)

If that had been my yard and my decoration, Omali Yeshítela would be calling a roofer, carpenter, glazier, and other contruction tradesmen to repair the damage to his home.

Then, I'd rebuild "Bob", and wait with a shotgun full of rock salt.

Ah. I remember this group or one of its predecessors-the "African People's Socialist Party" from my brief stint in the "Other Bay Area*" They basically rioted and beat up a bunch of ANTI-RACISM protestors who were not of the proper ethnicity.

*Sorry Floridians, the Tampa Bay Area was pretty awful at the time. KKK running for sherif, nasty skinhead punks beating people up in the Ybor City "entertainment District" weirdo Scientologists owning all of downtown Clearwater, groups like this, and the entire coastline lined with ugly concrete towers and 7-11s for miles. I'm sure its gotten much, much better, but there was a real "mean" feeling to the place in the late 1980s.

    That is SO UNFAIR!

Love the Rocksalt Ideaj, mr. Omali Yeshítela deserves it.

Since the authorities were involved, they should know who the truesspassers were and therefore issue tresspassing tickets as well as vandalism citations.

As far as christians not liking our holiday... If we could just get the damned christians out of our freaking holidays, they would be so much more enjoyable. Why can't they just go and grovel in thier unsaved worthlessness where we don't have to put up with them. Take YULE for instance, christians ruined a perfectly good holiday. We used to be able to celebrate our dieties in peace over a whole series of days. There was dancing, and singing! Plenty of beer to go round, and a lot of sex! Great big parties dedicated to the return of the sun involving lots of the old in-out in order to bring old Sol back from below the horrizon.

What did the christians jam down our throats? ONE damned tee-totaling holiday in which you are supposed to feel crapy and miserable about your station in the universe and pretending to celebrate the birth of some guy who was born in the middle of summer.

Hanging a dummy in your front yard is not a good idea on any day. Besides I don't really see the connection between Halloween and lynching.

I'd suggest that "lynching" rarely involves gallows... But in any case, who has the right to come on anothers property and destroy what they've built? (Aside from planners, of course...)
