Just a quick question about Detroit

Just this past weekend, the Mrs...Star and I traveled to the great city of Detroit to watch my beloved Redskins kick the Detroit Lions' a$$. I met up with my best friend from Omaha who now lives in Lansing. After the game, we wanted to grab a bite before hitting the road. However, there was no establishments immediately near Ford Field to eat. The Detroit Opera House is across the street from the stadiums, and one would think there would be some nice white table cloth restaurants to patronize. Having been my first time ever to Detroit, I assumed that there were some sports bars, restaurants, pizzerias adjacent to Ford Field and Comerica Park. We ended up finding a Burger King near Toledo as we were headed back to her sister's in Akron. It just seems the suburbanites from Birmingham, Southfield, Royal Oak come down I-75 to game the get the hell out of Dodge afterwards. If I had the cash and the political clout, I could clean up in Detroit.

P.S. Why is Tiger Stadium still standing?

The restaurants are anywhere from 5 to 10 blocks away, mostly by Greektown and the Ren Center. The People Mover is a great way to find them. Intermezzo is an excellent Italian resaurant by the opera house and Broadway area. Pricey, but yummy and urban. There's Fishbone's at Greektown Casino. Other good eats are found to the north by Wayne State University. And then there's Vivio's to the east off Gratiot at the Eastern Market. But you are right, not much by Ford Field. There are a number of great restuarants in the City of Detroit. Trust me. You wouldn't be disappointed if you were to eat at one. But for an out-of-towner like yourself, yeah, it's tough to find them. Sorry to hear about your experience. A very common complaint from those who aren't from the area.

hmm You saw the Opera House, but you did not see the Detroit Brewing Company or Small Plates? Greektown is only a few blocks from the Stadii, that is where the bulk of the restraunts are; and were there prior to the building of the stadiums. In addition kitty-corner from the Main Door to Ford Field is the Elwood, a historical art deco carner bar/diner that was moved from the corner of ELizabeth and WOODward along with the Gem Theatre during the construction.

In addition across Woodward are Hockeytown, Johnny Rocketts and just a few blocks down Woodward is the financial district with a "Hard Rock" and several other restraunts. I think one of the problems is that folks park so close to the stadium that there are not many restraunts between the stadii and most of the parking.

Word on the street is that a Ruth's Chris Streakhouse will open in Ford Field soon, and there are several restraunts in the Ball Park (Comerica) the open onto Woodward.

In short there are numerous restraunts downtown. If there was not I could cut my personal trainer out of my budget! True fewer are open on Sundays, but on Game Days they are all open.

Tiger Stadium is still standing because they are trying to figure out what to do with it. There are not many old ballparks left over that have its character. The City issued an RFP a few years ago that resulted in some very odd uses including Condos and a health club. They were going to reissue an RFP, but I don't know if that has been done. Much of the City's efforts these days have been concentrated on the Woodward Corridor and the Central Business district. Neighborhood projects such as Tiger Stadium have taken a back seat as the lofts going into downtown, the new jobs downtown, and the superbowl have taken precidence.

I'm glad Elwoods got a mention. I put myself through college (go State!) valet parking cars at the Fox and State Theater and have had many a good meal and conversation at the El.

Sorry to hear that one of the choices mentioned above weren't evident to you whenst departing Ford Field......

I miss Detroit's food terribly . Nobody out here knows how to make a decent 'za and forget about getting a good coney dog or baklava.....

For teh real adventure, take a trip over to mexican twn and go to "soshees" (pronounced, who knows how it is spelled) or to mexican town restaurant. both good, but in a dodgy part of town.


Could always cross the border for some tunnel BBQ.

NorthOmaha, you should try www.visitdetroit.org for restraunts. The dailies have restraunt critics as well www.freep.com and www.detnews.com. MetroTimes has them as well, but they have an overemphasis on trendy crap = cool/good.

Here are a few favorite ethnic restaurants. The list is incomplete, I must return to the Mighty Motor soon. No Ford Field area locations though.

Yikes. You must have come out of a different door than we did after that game. You can't swing a surveying rod around there without hitting a restaurant, bar or pub. Per the previous posts, you should not have a problem finding a good place to go after the game. Besides, you are a planner- Bring a map! (And if you go to a Pison's game bring a helmet).

PS- yes, we 'suburbanites' do get of Dodge after most games. But only after we eat dinner.

Sounds like Wilmington Delaware. I remember getting off the interstate to get a bite to eat in this City and finding ZIP, Nada, Zilch, diddly, zip, zippo, squat, zero.....But as for Detroit, I just gotta get up there so I can participate in the discussion.....
