The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame
One (1) of my favorites on my PC is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame web site. Always some interesting rock and roll trivia, etc. I do have a couple problems, though, with their inductees.
Looking at the list of hall of fame inductees, they seemed to be in two (2) separate camps......first tier "biggies", such as The Beatles, Elvis, etc. Then, the groups or performers that made a difference for a decade or so, such as The Rascals, etc. My issue: The group Chicago has been around forever, first organized in 1968-69 as the Chicago Transit Authority. Their kick-frog first few albums were a fantastic blend of hard rock and roll (...."thank you, Terry Kath"....) and blaring horns. Later, they became pop song machines, but to me, just "blah". But, they made as much of a difference to rock and roll in the early 1970's as many of the other inductees, especially in that 2nd tier. The Staple Singers? Give me a break. My other issue: Blood, Sweat & Tears was also extremely influential in horn-based rock and roll. Their first album may be one (1) of the best of all times, and David Clayton Thomas' superb voice produced hit after hit. Critics explained these two as such: "Blood, Sweat & Tears is a horn group, playing rock and roll. Chicago is a rock and roll group, playing horns." Both groups should be considered and entered into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Seeking opinions and other nominations from the "throbbing rock and roll Brian of Cyburbia". 25 Or 6 To Bear

Chicago annoys people too much to be in the Hall of Fame
I think they will eventually get in there, but it will probably be on a down year when there is a lack of decent first time nominees. What about Kiss? Moody Blues? Alan Parsons Project? And even though I think they are one of the most annyoing bands ever, Rush should at least get a look.

B,S, & T Yes, Chicago, No
I'm with you on B, S, & T 's induction to the R&R HOF but I can't see Chicago - their stuff was way too "formula-based" - I don't think they pushed the envelope musically where David Clayton Thomas and B,S, & T were really a innovative and exciting band. I had the fortune of seeing them live and the energy level was overwhelming....

It has been years since I have even heard and Alan Parsons song on the radio. Genesis should also be inducted (if they haven't already) I'd also like to see some more "new wave" or progressive bands/artists inducted: The Cure, The Call, R. E. M. etc) |

I still stand by my Chicago admission plea.....their first three (3) albums introduced a new way to play rock and roll. They had an influence on later bands. I agree that their later stuff was formula......too dang pop. Bear ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Spinning The Disc
Dropping the tone arm down to re-open an old thread.....
It's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame season.....and time to listen to some suggestions from the platter-spinners of Cyburbia......who or what groups should be in the Rock Hall? I stand by my Chicago submission from the thread initiation post. Read that post to see why. Others that should be in the hall..... The Moody Blues A great blend of rock and classical riffs, mixed with lyrics to smoke dope by. Steppenwolf Hard-driving garage rock and roll.....and one of the best tunes ever, "The Pusher". Mott The Hoople These guys did glam before glam was in. And they did it wonderfully. as "young dudes" should. Tommy James & The Shondells With no admission to the hall, TJ should be chanting, "Get ____, get ______" to the sounds of "Mony Mony". This Bear is a mid-60s teen so TJ is great with me. The Turtles These guys did a slew of singable and danceable rock and roll. They should be in. Johnny Rivers JR was a dominant voice in the 1960s and I am quite sure his presentation, his lyrics, and his style influenced male singers in the decades that followed. Rush Still playing to huge crowds, these guys made some of the best music of the 1970s. Their later stuff has been pretty good, too. They should be in. _____ No offense to you hip-hop fans out there, but I would replace Grandmaster Flash with any of the above. Agree to disagree. _____ Any other suggestions? Bear

By the next time the HOF hits, it will be 2010. Meaning that we will be having groups in there who's debut albums came out in 1985 or later.
Some groups that I think deserve to go in the near future: Bad Company Beastie Boys The Big Bopper Bon Jovi The Cars Cheap Trick Alice Cooper Deep Purple Def Leppard Duran Duran Foreigner Heart Jethro Tull Journey KC and the Sunshine Band Kiss The Marvelettes The Monkees Ozzy Osbourne REO Speedwagon Rush Steppenwolf Three Dog Night The Turtles

Kind of OT
My city *at the time* made it to the All American City competiton. It was in Cleveland that year. The opening ceremony was at the RARHOF before it officially opened. I have a hard hat from the event. It kicked arse. That was when then Flats was cool. Years later I went back and saw the Lenon exhibit. Way cool. |

I thought it was Crimson and Clover? And yes, a totally annoying song.

And where are
Arlo Guthrie Boston Brook Benton Doobie Brothers Kansas Smokey Robinson & The Miracles? Actually they should just induct all the Motown groups.

My bad, I missed Smokey when I looked at the list. Looks like he was inducted but not the Miracles?

Yes, you are correct. The World Almanac says only he was inducted.

I equate the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with the Grammys as opposed to a true "best of the best", like the halls of fame for the major professional sports. Music is so subjective, unlike hitting 500 home runs or winning 300 games, or winning 5 MVPs. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame isn't even on my radar, and I'm a huge fan of music.

Ditto btrage's attitude. It's like the Oscars - is there a correlation between good cinematography and Best Picture? Generally yes. Is the Best Picture usually the best picture? By no means; it's typically just the flavor of the week.
