Are we missing a holiday ?

From the AP Wire, January 4, 2005:

Summary: Battle of New Orleans Was Holiday

Battle of all Battles: The Battle of New Orleans, waged 190 years ago, was the final engagement of the final war with England.

The Victor: Andrew Jackson defeated the British on Jan. 8, 1815; the day became a national holiday after Jackson became president in 1828.

Faded Glory: By 1865, after the Civil War and Jackson's death in 1845, the holiday had faded. Historians argue Americans no longer remember a significant event.

Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

Are you sure you're not hurt ?
No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.

    I second the motion.

I demand to honor this day for its importance to the development of our country...and to have another day to sit at home drinking beer.
Dude, I'm cheesing so hard right now.

    I'm all for it.

While we're at it, why aren't there any holidays remembering the end of the Civil War? Robert E. Lee surrendered to U.S. Grant in April, 1865; that would be deserving of a day off.

Well.. I don't know how, but for some bizarre reason chilean historians f*cked up our independance date; from the real February 12th, 1818 to September 18th 1810 (When a civilian group loyal to the King of Spain captured by Napoleon formed a provisional government to protect us from the french and to guard the Kings possesions; talk about "independance"!)

So, nobody celebrates our true independance day... that's sad... although most of chileans take their summer vacations that on February so it's kindda ridiculous to celebrate it.

Well, if I'm missing a day off work then we are missing a holiday. Let's start celebrating!

I'm sure the Southern states will get around to adopting that as a holiday any day now.

However, don't let the avatar fool you. I'd be all for it.

If anyone deserves a holiday, it's the citizens of New Orleans. Since the battle is reenacted every year at the battlegrounds, they may as well make it a city holiday.

Don't give the folks in Boston any more ideas. Any more civil holidays up there, and it'll be like the ancient Romans.

Or, according to my husband, the modern Germans.
