There are literally thousands and thousands of pornographic Web sites out there, most of which are updated with fresh material once a week or so. On Usenet, there are hundreds of news groups with porn image binaries, many of which get new posts every 30 seconds or so. I'm not offended by most pron, but I'm shocked by the amount content that's out there; if only a small amount is making it onto even Usenet, there has to be hundreds of simultaneous porn photo shoots taking place throughout the country at any given time.

Meanwhile, in the real world, there's Paris Hilton and other celebrities filming their private sexual exploits. Go onto Kazaa, and you'll find evidence that thousands of others are doing the same, especially college students in dorms filming their awkward sexual encounters. One popular film online shows a well-endowed Northern Arizona State student humping a very young-looking co-ed, interrupted by a roommate who walks in and crashes on the adjacent bed. There are Web sites featuring thousands of emo girls posing in their underwear, looking to hook up with other misunderstood, emotionally and physically frail emo dudes.

When I was in college -- mid-to-late 1980s -- you were lucky if you saw a female student's headlights in an air conditioned building. Now, it seems as if every other member of Generation Y is stripping -- and sometimes doing more -- for the camera. Is this really the case, and if so, why?

I dont know if it is "more" people stripping or watching/engaging in porn...I think that may be the case somewhat but I also think with the amount of technology and information sharing that we have now compared to the 80"s (and prior) that we are seeing more these days. I also think it is more socially acceptable than it used to be, therefore, people arent so afraid to talk about it.

Maybe in previous times, there just wasn't a camera around to catch all this and a waiting audience to devour the content. It's almost similiar to illegally sharing copyrighted content. Of course it was done before the 90's and the internet, but with pcs and the internet it has taken it to a new level. If the internet would have come along one generation earlier or later, it probobly wouldn't matter much. The same effects would be seen. In that respect it seems similiar to pron.

Yes, it's true. Approximately 50.8% of Generation Y are strippers/exhibitionists.

I really don't understand this obcession with videotaping sexual exploits and posting them online. I could understand people doing it to spice up their sex life to relive moments, but putting it out on the internet baffles me. Even then, there's still a risk of things coming back to haunt you later in life (better keep track of who has the tape, right Paris?)

During the 1970s, most porn actually had storylines and plots as well as sexually explicit content. It was shot on 35mm and the best of it was just as good as any B-Movie you see on late night TV. Some of the acting (away from the sex scenes) could be pretty decent or at least watchable. Everyone knew all the big names: Ron Jeremy, Annette Haven, John Holmes, Seka, yada yada yada.

But by the mid 1980s, with the advent of video, good story lines were thrown out for the sake of more obligatory sex scenes done by complete amateurs who just happen to look hot (and have big boobs of course, fake or otherwise). Basically any moron with a video camera could shoot some low-production porn, flash a couple of $100s to three or four willing 18 year olds, spend a few thousand dollars on glossy packaging, and maybe a couple more on boob jobs, and make tens of thousands of dollars in profit.

Now, with the advent of Internet porn, it's even worse. Amateur pay porn sites and web cams have multiplied like cockroaches across the web. 1970s-era porn is now as distant as 15th Century erotic art from Japan. Actors are a dime-a-dozen, and usually only last a couple of years because there is always younger "talent' waiting in the wings in droves. No one remembers their names because, with so many look-alike amateurs out there, there really is nothing worth remembering.

The logic of porn today is why watch some has-been 30-year old in a movie theater, when there are plenty of barely-legals with cameras set up in their bedrooms and masturbatory oblivion just a mouse click and credit card number away.
The porn of yore had scenes and storylines to keep you interested between the sex scenes. Today, porn is almost exclusively marketed to a bunch of horny guys who are only interested in seeing naked women having sex.
