I know, probably a weird time for it (since it isn't the end of the year), but I recently made a list of my 25 favorite albums from the 2000s, ordered chronologically...

It's not a weird time for it at all. I made one up at the start of the year but I still (and probably will continue to for some time) find albums that I missed that I would put in my "Best Of" list. I read a lot of music journalism and criticism and over the past year or so, I've really started to become skeptical of any "Best Of" lists that come out right at the end of the year. How much stuff could they have possibly missed? Or maybe two years later, a lot of the albums they thought they really loved, did not hold up as well to repeated listens.

Even when I put together my best of the last decade list, I realized I had a lot more albums from first half of the decade than I did from the second half. That has to be more a function of time than it is of the quality of music. Arguments that music from this year isn't as good as music from years past just do not hold water to me. People have been making that argument for the last 45 years!

Johnny & The Hurricances were from Toledo and the inner-ring suburb of Rossford. In their time they sold a ton of instrumentals. Dig the sax, man, dig the sax. I'm so hip.

This Bear wondered what all the hub-bub was all about....what is this Glee thing that is winning awards and dominating the music charts? I was curious, watched a couple reruns.

Hooked!

Bought the DVD of the second half of the first season. Even more hooked! Glee is very good. If you like musicals....and I do.....you will like this program. I really enjoy the different arrangements of familiar tunes. And the songs span generations. Good stuff!

Easy Livin' may have been Heep's only chart hit. It is more pop-rock than metal. Some folks called Uriah Heep "poor man's Deep Purple". Livin' is a good tune, too.

.....to his new release Born Free......a tribute to the U.P.

He's basically gone from a slightly cooler version of Vanilla Ice to a southern country rocker.

Bob has always had an eclectic mix of musical influences, but his music is so dramatically different now.

Are there any other major "reimagings" that have taken place with musical artists??

The other day I decided to put all of my Eric Clapton music into one playlist in order of when the songs were originally released.

The Beatles (While My guitar Gently Weeps)

Plastic Ono Band (Live Peace in Toronto 1969)
some more Cream
Delaney & Bonnie & Friends
First solo album
George Harrison (All Things Must Pass)
Derek & The Dominoes
The Concert for Bangladesh
a bit of live Derek & The Dominoes
and a bunch more solo stuff

All in all, I have about 40 hours worth of Clapton not including the box set extras from Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs nor the bootleg alternate takes from the Blind Faith sessions, no greatest hits albums or compilations, no repeating the same recording of the same song and the only solo album post 1978 that I have is Unplugged.

I've listened to a few hours worth at work every day since then and I am currently up to 1969 and Blind Faith.

Girl Talk is a mash-up artist but probably the one that set the standard for the genre. Every song contains 0% original material - it is all bits and snip-its of the work of other artists (or, conversely, each song contains 100% original material based upon and changing the work of others). He has never faced a serious lawsuit because he is very good at skirting fair-usage concerns by generally not using more than 20 consecutive seconds (or whatever the max is) of any song at once.

He has actually been pretty favorably received by the mainstream record industry, so much so that he has been approached by representatives from major labels like Columbia and EMI to make albums based solely on their back catalogs... So far he has declined.

Yesterday he released his fifth full-length album and it is available for free in its entirety from the label's website: Girl Talk - All Day - Illegal Art I've listened to about half of it so far this morning and it's great. His production values get better and better with each effort making every subsequent album he releases that much more listenable.



On a side note - I once saw him perform live at an outdoor concert in a Chicago park and it was so packed that the fire department actually had to stop the show in hopes that the crowd would thin out (I've never been to an OUTDOOR concert where that was a problem before). Of all the concerts I've been to (probably pushing close to 750 by now), his rival only those of Daft Punk and Dan Deacon in terms of energy. Truly an experience to behold!

I see through the news wires that Apple Computer has finally reached a deal to make most of the Beatles' catalog available through iTunes downloads - the first ever on-line download licensing deal for their stuff - YEARS after pretty much everyone has already ripped and/or illegally 'black market'/file-share downloaded whatever they wanted in their .mp3 players anyways.

I'm sure that I have a minority opinion here- I like Clapton, but I really think he is overated. Not the best guitar player, not a great singer, and alot of his hit songs are uninspiring IMO.

While I like Clapton, he isn't the "best" guitar player.......I'm thinking Joe Satriani and/or Andy Taylor lead that list

I am partial towards Jeff Beck as a top 5 guitar player.
