    Commie commercials!

I read about this site on another message board, and thought some here might find it amusing.

    http://reklamok.gergoke.hu/

I have no idea what the text reads, but there's 101 commercials from Hungary in the 1980s. It's strange to see running dog capitalist-style commercials that aired on state-run television of a Soviet puppet.

The commercials don't seem too different than what would have aired on North American television in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and the people depicted in them don't look unfashionable by 1980s standards. A few commercials are cheesy as hell, though. They do seem to have a distinct Eastern European feel, though, and some feel like they're trying too hard to be Western.

    Enjoy.

They take a long time to download, but the two I did were funny. Who has time to find this stuff and why?
    Annoyingly insensitive

Tried to read the text, but my Hungarian is limited to conversation and not reading. Funny commericals though, although I had to listen to them at low volume. (I'm at work)
You get all squeezed up inside/Like the days were carved in stone/You get all wired up inside/And it's bad to be alone

You can go out, you can take a ride/And when you get out on your own/You get all smoothed out inside/And it's good to be alone

So very wrong, but too funny.

    Hilarious!

On a somewhat related note, one of my professors for research methods was using an issue of Soviet Life as an example the other day of how you can find interesting information in odd places. He used to consult for the government on Soviet computer technology back in the late 70s/early 80s and used the magazine to snag some pictures from the inside of Chernobyl (before the glow) as American investigators tried to piece together what the situation was. He used to spend a lot of time analyzing photos of computer systems, etc. He was also quick to point out that other areas of it were not reliable because of the government controls.

The 'real' cold war pretty much predates me, but I was facinated that you could get a magazine in the US called Soviet Life. Apparently it was part of a culture / propaganda exchange between the USSR and US with American Life.

"Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country."
