    Dayton, Ohio....a forgotten waterpower district.

They've always made things in Dayton...even before easy access to wider markets peoples minds where on industry (Dayton was founded by people from New Jersey, so maybe Patterson was on their mind?)...

...a Fourth of July toast was "..To manufactories...may our exports exceed our imports!"

So, a few pix of an early waterpower district...fed by a hydraulic race.

First some old maps showing the "hydraulic" and the mill complex..one that lists the firms operating at the site.

Now, a few pix of the mills...built into a slope of a hill, which provided a "14 foot fall" for overshot wheels and probably later turbines.

This building was the orginal home of Mead paper company..now Mead Westvaco.

Red brick mills are great. Does Dayton have any fixed up/yuppified ones? (Of course, if the doom-and-gloomers are right, we will be needing water powered industrial districts in the future )

yes, but they are closer in to downtown..they are more traditional loft buildings and not as old as the ones in the pix.

These actually have been used as artists studios & band practice space...but also for small companys, too...
