Am I in the right place?

    Hi from Vanderhoof
    Where???
A community of approx. 5000 dead center in the middle of British Columbia.

I'm a CED practionner working for an NGO. My background is Banking and specialized consulting ( viability assessments ) and half a lifetime learning things the hard way.

I'm looking for a forum to brainstorm solutions to CED problems and be a part of an informal network to pursue mutual opportunities ( possibly? )

    We're all in this together....

    Graham.

    Hey from north Florida,
I think you've found the right place. Check out the the ED sub-form: http://www.cyburbia.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=6

There are many interesting discussions about economic development in smaller communities.

Northboy, my community is just a little bigger than Vanderhoff and is located in central Kansas. I wear the Eco Devo hat along with my regulatory (Planning, Zoning, Code Enforcement, Building Code) hat. Hey, it's a small town. You are defintely in the right place. Welcome and enjoy.

    Welcome from Chicagoland, USA!!!!

Small town planning and ED would be interesting. I'm currently doing suburban planning in the Chicago suburbs.
I'm sorry. Is my bias showing?

The ends can justify the means.

    Thanks for the welcome

Unfortunately, I don't have much to do with small town planning as such, my mandate is to assist in building sustainable business and industry. In short, my performance is basically graded on how many family supporting sustainable jobs I can help develop. I have a fair amount of latitude in this....

Oh and I can't forget development of the social enterprise sector as well as supporting volunteerism in all areas.

Basically I'm a glorified business analyst working under contract for the Fedral government..But it's waaaay too much fun!!!

I worked for years in The Black Tower ( TD Main office)

OK let's play you transferred me where???

Fort St. James -- of course this one's in my service area- they're competing with Mackenzie for development of a copper mine proposed by Placer Dome right now--
Mount Milligan site-- you know it??
FSJ more millionaires per capita than anywhere in BC

I'm glad they let you escape....

I was in Mackenzie for a merciful short 6 months in high school - transferred because of my dad and the pulp mill... its the first place I'd ever known where drug use, pregnancy, and drop-out rates were all about 75%... suffice to say, I went to a boarding school just to get out of there!!! Does Vanderhoof still have an airshow every year?

Welcome, and yes there are people here who have ideas and thoughts about CED and all of the other acronyms the Fed's want to use to describe it. You may want to look up with the folks at the Rural and Small Towns Group at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB. You may also look for info on the "rural university" project. Also check out Bruce County, ON for ideas related to capacity building and CED - Building Bruce Project.

From a former rural planner who's office also had things to do with CED.

No that ended before I got here 2 years ago..
Drug abuse et al--- You sure you weren't in FSJ????
Whole town more money than brains..
What do you think of Gord's gifts announced today--- ( for others) surplus budget to pay down debt 1.2 b and no provincial income tax for incomes under $15,500.00

What are they going to do with the money when they finally get around to putting the oil in the Nechako Basin into production let alone the mining......

May be you can get some bucks for that Tynehead Park project if its still on the books...
