Best Mexican Eats
We Cyburbians live all over the world, and a lot of us seem to like Mexican food, so lets start a list of the best places to get Mexican eats outh there.
One of my absolute favorite places is Porto Nuevo the small town of Walhalla, South Carolina (pop. 5,000 or so). There is a large Mexican population there, and even though the good is tweaked for Ameican taste, you will even see a few of the non-gringos eating there on any given day. I've yet to find good Mexican here in western Pennsylvania other than Mad Mex . Which is very good but really doesn't count because they serve some kind of Mexican/California fusion cuisine. and I forgot about El Charro in Clovis, New Mexico. The Chili Rellenos were to die for. ![]() ****************** Corn or Flour Tortillas for Enchildas?

Tacos Moreno, Santa Cruz, CA. A hole in the wall, but everything is authentic and great.

Mrs H and I crave 'Texas Taco' in Miami (on US 1 in the Gables).
...fresh tortillas y carne asada..... Although I guess this is technically "Tex-Mex"

Although some sneer at the concept of "burritos" I love the Alambre Burrito at a small, bare bones Mexican restaurant in my town, Vacaville, called La Cocina. She takes steak, tomatoes, jalapenos, onions, and grills them all together. Amazing!
For a "nice" restaurant, I kinda like Cafe Marimba in San Francisco. Great folk art decor, awesome mole sauce and other Oaxacan specialties. The Chevy's chain has really good chips and salsa, too.

Is Guatemalan close enough? For some odd reason there is a large Guatemalan population in Fredericton, NB and Saint John NB and many have opened restaurants or taco stands at the markets.
Need to go on a hunt in TO for a good place.

Depends...New Mexico Mex or Tex-Mex? Gotta love em both but they are 2 different animals.
NM Mex: The carne asada at Rancho de Chimayo is one of the most orgasmic Mexican dinners I've ever had! And the atmosphere is the coolest. Chimayo is a nice drive just northeast of Santa Fe. Tex-Mex: I could list many local places but On the Border is excellent. If you have one in your area, you should try it! Muy bueno

I always enjoyed Tijuana Flats in Central Florida. Have yet to find a good one here. I know that there is a TF here but it isn't as good. I am a junkie for Mexican so i try all sorts of different places. I do understand there is a real authentic Mexican restaurant in my town but I have not made it there yet. Don Pablo's is good in a pinch.

In Milwauee we have an abundance of great Mexican restaurants. My favorites are Jalapeno Loco, which has a bunch of great mole dishes, Cempazuchi, which is an upscale regional restaurant, and Hector's, which is more Tex-Mex, but they have excellent food.
In Chicago I really like the Taco and Burrito Place on Braodway (not to be confused with the Taco and Burrito Palace nearby). Even though it is just a small, mainly carry-out place, they have the best steak tacos I have ever eaten.

In NE Wisconsin, you can't beat Los Compadres. Especially that yummy bean dip! Everything is made from scratch, and I have heard from credible sources that their kitchens are the cleanest in the Valley. The one just outside of Appleton is classier, but the one in Menasha has the best food and ambiance (although it is a bit small - it used to be a tiny gas station/convenience store).

I wonder if there are Mexican restaurants in other parts of the world like Europe Asia or Australia? (Whoever suggests that there is a Taco Bell/Chi Chis in Rome gets shot! I'm talking about food here ok?)

The best in Houston is hard - because so far I haven't found one. The locals swear by Ninfa's, but I think it's only so-so. Lupe's Tortillas is better, but still not great. There's a place my hubby likes - Little Gringo - which is the best of the local options, but I swear, for a city the size of Houston, the Mexican food offerings are slim!
In north Dallas, the absolute best of the best is a place called La Finca - right off Highway 75. We used to drive 20 miles just to have dinner there. If we couldn't make it there, then a small place in a strip mall called 7 Tacos was pretty good - they had great tamales! If you don't like Mexican/Tex-Mex/other-Mex food, then move to Hawaii. The "best" Mexican food restaurant on the island of Oahu was El Chico.

This could be a long list:
Tucson - El Charro is reliably excellent, but there are many other good choices, including the Sanchez burrito place off Speedway. There is also one on the south side I could drive you to, though I don't remember the name, that has the best Mexican breakfast ever, except maybe in a remote part of CO: Alamosa - the Monterey Cafe. The huevos rancheros smothered in chile verde are the one thing I dream of most since I stopped eating meat. Durango - downtown, on the same block as the Strater Hotel, but I can't recall the name Idaho Falls and Pocatello - places with agri-industry usually have good Mexican food. Mama Inez is consistently great. Espanola - El Paragua, the best possible New Mexican style cuisine Salt Lake City - the Red Iguana, La Frontera, and more I could go on and on, but it would make me cry. The best Mexican restaurant in Vermont (at least so far) would not be able to stay open a week in Tucson. |

Red Iquana in SLC. The best mole selection I've ever had (damn, Lee, your fast)
Can't remember the name, but there was a little taco stand on Pacific Beach in San Diego that rocked. They had very littel storage, so everything was fresh daily. When they ran out of food, they closed for the day. There fish for their fish tacos was purchased at the fish markets in the morning they served. As far as Hawaii, the taco van on Kauai has great food. The authentic taco carts have some of the best "street" tacos around. For more of a fast food type selection, Albertos & Molcasalsa. |

Some really good hole-in-the-wall places in North Greeley, Colo. (Don't go at night) These kinds of places was where the owners would have to get their young daughter to take your order in English, you were the only English speaker, and the food was authentic. (Plus, you could wash it down with a Jumex, or sugary Mexican Cokes in the glass bottles). Fantastic.
Denver has some good places too, but if we are talking authenic Mexican, LaFogata or the BreweryBar or great. Cheap and good, and tastes great, Wash it down with a cold Carta Blanca (The BEST Mexican beer in this planner's mind)

Lee, if you mean the one at Craycroft and Speedway, yes it is very good.
Phoenix: I love Tee Pee. The pres ate there during one of his visits so it was over crowded, but it is back to normal. In west Phoenix is Garcia's. This restaurant may remind some of the chain, but in fact this is the Garcia's family restaurant on which the chain is based. A lot of people here really love Barrio cafe, but only like it. I try mexican food when I travel, but it is usually a disappointment. |

That is the one I mean. I am also trying to remember a good place in Flagstaff, out on the strip south (or is that west) of downtown. And a place in Las Cruces (Dan?)
I forgot to add Fiesta Vallarta in Paonia (also Delta) CO. We used to walk there. Sniff, sniff. Good cheese and maple syrup don't make up for it. |

For dirt cheap Mexican food that's still pretty darn good, Herb's Taco Hut in San Marcos.
I'm a pretty big fan of Adobe Verde in Gruene, TX (little village area in New Braunfels). There's a good Mexican place in La Villita down in San Antonio that serves up the best margaritas around.
