Call Out The Border Guards, The Kingdom Is Crumbling

"Call out the border guards, the kingdom is crumbling". These words were part of a song written and performed in the early 1970's. The name of the song was "The Great American Eagle Tragedy". This Bear still has the vinyl.

Of course, it was a reference to America at that time.....involved in a foreign war, not very well-respected by other countries, a lot of dissent on the home front, a lot of us-versus-them division in the homes of the country.

Twenty-five (25) years later we haven't "crumbled". Over these years we have seen all kinds of problems, issues, "events that changed the world', etc. but we are still here, plodding on.

If you listen to some of the media, if you read some of the threads and posts in Cyburbia, if you watch some of the movies, if you listen to some of the songs.....they all seem to indicate that our own version of the Roman Empire is about to topple.

What do you think? Are we "in for it" in the next twenty-five (25) years or will it be another round of the same-old, same-old?

In the early '70's, young folk had a great deal of pessimism - based on the perceived differences between their liberal educations and a country in an elective war, corporated control of the economy, and with a portion of the population required to use separate bathrooms and separate schools because of race. (gross oversimplification.) As a result of the perception that those were wrong, they assembled, protested, marched, etc. and stopped both the war and segregation. (and also changed stodgy fashions, stodgy music, and many social mores.)

Today, there is an elective war, more extensive corporate control, and an acceptance of racial profiling for 'national security." The main difference is that it is those former kids who are supporting the war, corporations, and emerging racism. And there is no group of kids in the wings thinking that those things are wrong.

I suspect we will muddle through, but I think there is a greater probability that we are "in for it" than in the 70's -- because of the lack of idealism and adherence to basic democratic principles. As one Democrat noted, there will be no investigation of things that seem to be wrong in government because it takes a committee chair to start an investigation, and there are no opposition party committee chairs. The Republican party discipline is so complete that the essential checks and balances of democracy are not in operation. If that continues for an extensive period, we are definitely "in for it."

US as a world power will fall if and only if, the US economy continues it's downfall, the exterior policy causes major resistance to too many powerfull governments and of course if the social problems continue to be unresolved. Oh and expect more terrorist attacks due to the Terrorist breeder policy the current government has...

Good summation. This article explores this idea further.

The dollar's already beginning to tumble. An empire costs money. We have off-shored much of our economy.
