    Local farmer seeks avatar.

These forums are a great resource.
I am a farmer in the path of some of the most intense development pressure in Michigan. Knowledge is power and I have found that our local land use planning is either woefully inadequate or hopelessly mired in political partisanship.
For people that have to work every day in order to make a living the seemingly endless debate from unenlightened government officials or partisan hacks (on either side) can be disheartening, leading many to give up on the local land use issues.
I don't talk like a "farmer" and I don't present like a "farmer" on land use issues which puzzles many of my township neighbors. It is because I can address these issues with facts and rationality rather than emotion and prejudice that I continue to be engaged in the local process.
I appreciate sites like this that allow even a dumb farmer to become more educated on issues that effect the whole community.

I also want an avatar, can anybody help me?
Maybe the most any of us can expect of ourselves isn't perfection but progress.

Greetings from the southwest. Er, of Michigan, that is.

There are quite a substantial number of Michigan planners here with whom you'll no doubt have interesting conversations. We also have what a number of what I would call *gentleman farmers* here as well. You ought to fit right in.

Thanks for registering and feel free to post early and often.

    Greetings from the heartland!
I am impressed that you already figured out how to post a picture. Many who have been around a long while don't know how to do that.
It is all a matter of perspective!!!

Uh, if you've read that Cyburbia FAQ can I assume that the above images you've posted are NOT being leeched from somewhere else?

    Welcome from Chicagoland!!!
I'm sorry. Is my bias showing?

Let's not be didactic in this profession, because that is a path to disillusion and irrelevancy.

    Hey

Good to have you around here.....Keeping it real in the "oat" field What do you farm? Flax seed? Cassava? Sunflowers? Oats? Development pressure might just make you filthy rich......then you could buy 10,000 acres in Iowa

Ag land preservation is where my professional heart is. I'm a conservation easement, TDR, PDR, UGB, RTF junky. I drink with farmers (wheat, milo, sorghum) and ranchers at least once a week. Welcome to the boards from a small town near the Flint Hills of Kansas.

HMMMM, the perfect avatar for a farmer? HMMMMMMM

I do not wish to displease the MODS. It appears I must reopen my long lost photobucket account if I wish to color my posts with photos...

Hmmm, it sounds like you are a current day version of Oliver Wendell Douglas. Here's my avitar suggestion for you.

Welcome from CO, we are also facing farmland/development issues (not US in particular, but the region) I will be curious to see the otherside's view on this topic.
You get all squeezed up inside/Like the days were carved in stone/You get all wired up inside/And it's bad to be alone

You can go out, you can take a ride/And when you get out on your own/You get all smoothed out inside/And it's good to be alone
