    Boston, MA- Newbie

    Hi All,

    Just joining the forum here.

Recently completed an MA in planning @ Clark University in Worcester, Mass. I've been doing a fair amount of brownfields inventory work ( enough gems in Mass to last a lifetime), local economic development work and design work for community and municipal presentations.

Looking forward to participating in the discussions. Favorite recent reads include Mike Davis' Dead Cities and his diatribe on the malfunction of San Diego (timely there); Kunstler's 'Long Emergency', Sandercock's 'Cosmopolis II', Friedmann's 'China's Urban Transition.

    Talk soon,

    Stephen

Welcome. I didn't think Clark had a MA Planning program. Is it new? If I remember from visiting, isn't there a big brownfield right across the street from the University?

Hello from Houston! (soon to be Irving)
"We do not need any other Tutankhamun's tomb with all its treasures. We need context. We need understanding. We need knowledge of historical events to tie them together. We don't know much. Of course we know a lot, but it is context that's missing, not treasures." - Werner Herzog, in Archaeology, March/April 2011

"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." Ben Franklin

Remember this motto to live by: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO- HOO what a ride!'"

Indeed you are correct on both pts: the planning program is 3 years new, and there is a huge brownfield right across the street that both the city and Clark have finally begun to redevelop- a great success story amongst the ruin of Worcester.

Maybe Clark's program is another reason why URI's is folding.
