lol...people must not like texas all that much.

    not fair!!

Okay, those were pictures of San Antonio.. and they couldn't make planing decisions to save their life.. beyond the natural cultivation of an uneducated population that votes on whether or not to have fluoride in their water before they ever figure out if they're going to have water, regardless of the fact that they put in a "great stadium" in instead of a "lake" to help with the impending water crisis. Those people want basketball not water, I don't see the logic.

Now they're looking at putting in a huge golf resort.. and where do they get that water from??

I'm going to still say I'd rather live in Texas, but I'd rather die a painfull death of enemas, fingernail pulling, and hot pokers in the rear than live in the Sahara.. I mean, San Antonio..
When Jesus said "love your enemies", he probably didn't mean kill them.

    Cool Pic, Texas Planner

This thread wasn't very nice of me, especially after telling Prudence not to take the easy shots.

By the way ... note the generous median landscaping.

I like Texans. Friendly, outgoing, salt-of-the-earth folks who typically treat strangers as if they're best friends.

As a planner, though, I hate Texas. Why? Just a horrible built environment. "Growth at any cost" rhetoric is embraced. Frontage road development. Sign/billboard clutter in most cities that would make Las Vegas look good in comparison. A few exceptions - some parts of the Austin and DFW Metroplex. Houston - no zoning. Unincorporated counties in Texas - no zoning, and minimal subdivision regulations that promote the creation of colonias.

Here's a good article about land use and development in the Lone Star state. Nope. Can't deal with it.

I won't get into the collective Texas fetish for enthusiastic implementation of the death penalty.

    Now seriously..

Everyone is picking out the WORST pictures of Texas.. and as far as El Paso goes, they've made leaps in redevelopment, but any border town is going to have some major issues to contend with..especially if you border on an area as poor as some of those border towns are.

Texas is a great place. If you've never been, I highly recommend it. As far as planning goes, Texas does have a long uphill battle to get to where it needs to be, but please don't blame all Texans for the mistakes of a few. TXDOT is responsible for a lot of our road troubles, but that being said I35 and the trade routes from Mexico to Canada don't let some of the greatest cities reach their potential in the highway system. Texas is a tricky state to plan in, we've got some crazy laws and 'm sure for anyone who has to deal with the "crazies" against zoning, you'd understand what you're up against when people don't want to be told what to do on their property. Well, times that by five and understand that in Texas, land is treasured by most. Unfortunately, money makes the world go 'round and if you've sold your soul to the devil for your cattle ranch to profit year after year, you don't have to make decisions on whether or not to sell out to a developer so you can still put your kids through college or if you will be able to eat and not go bankrupt.

Texans love Texas. We're born that way. No matter where I live, I will always, and I mean always, feel at home in Texas. Yes, Texans can be "out there" about our love of the State. We're not all stupid, we don't all speak with drawls, and we're not all conservative.

It's true that we've made some mistakes in our Elected Officials.. but that's not all Texans nor should that reflect on the state as a whole. Every nation has his screw-ups.. and practically being the buckle of the "bible-belt" doesn't help Texas much. We're a huge state, 2nd in size.. we've got a ton of room for crazies, nutballs, and your regular psychos.. but it's an amazing state... We've got rolling hills, beautiful rivers, and great hospitality.

As far as Bush goes.. well, Florida is guilty too with Jeb and that hidiously dressed woman sticking up for GW.. and you can't blame Texas for the Electoral College.
