Part Time / Full Time Mayors

Peoria just had an election yesterday, and a new mayor was elected. I thought of the fact that this community has a part-time mayor. As of last years special census, we're at about 116,000. What's the biggest community you are aware of that has a part-time mayor. Also, what about the smallest that has a full-time mayor.

East Peoria, 22,000, has a full time mayor right across the river.

Edit: I think that it is nearly impossible for a part-timer to complete any campaign promises for a community of this size.

We are a Council-Manager form of government, anyway.

We are at about 100,000 and have a part-time mayor. It really depends on the form of government you have. In a council/manager form, you really do not need a full-time mayor.

My fair city of 121,500 has a full-time Mayor, part-time council.

40,000 with a full-time mayor. But, part-time legal department (attorney only, no paralegal staff); part-time engineering department (p.e. only, no staff); no works board (handled by planning staff for the most part); and, no-time information/it department.

We have a very interesting system (34,000 pop.), a full time mayor that oversees the police department and sits on various boards (Chamber of Commerce, Civic Center Board, Tourism, etc.). Then we have a City Manager that oversees the whole budget and the DPW, Electric, Maintenance, IT, Parks/Rec and Admin. Services. Finally the City Council oversees my Department, Planning and Inspections, the Tax Assessors, Finance and City Clerk (those Department heads are hired and fired at will by Council).

This system, for this size city, seems the worst to me; especially having Planning controlled by the will of the very political City Council.

Helena has about 25,000 residents and a part-time mayor.

No mayor. Council/Manager form of government. I believe in the whole state there are a total of 8 or 9 mayors out of 235 communities.

Its a City Manager style of gov so the elected folks did not get in the way...too much.

Where I am now both are part time as well. City of 20,000
