If you are going on an interview...

make sure your attire (suit) goes with your accessories. If you are wearing a suit...don't sling a hiking-backpack over your shoulder or one of those oversized colorfully striped beach bags from Old Navy. I'm not saying you need to have a briefcase...but don't look like you are heading to the gym after the interview. It might be different if you are interviewing with some extremely grass-roots organization.... or Cooperative Extension...but not a large planning office.

We have had several people coming in for an interview...dressed really nice...but then they get up and grabbed these bags.... I might be old-fashioned..but it just looked odd. I asked a co-worked and they thought the same thing when they saw them. Carry just a note book instead and leave the bags in the trunk of your car....

Like all good planners, they were probably just multi-tasking. Given the job market for planners these days, it is likely they were off to their next interview - taking ticket stubs at the movies!

More tips from someone who has been annoyed by many interviewees...

Don't give a resume with a semi-pornographic or silly e-mail address. Just get a hotmail address with your first initial and last name or something similar.

Don't tell the interviewer that the job isn't really what you want to do for a living and then bitch when you don't get the job. Did you really think you were going to get the job?

Ugh.
