Yes, the original version (from the soundtrack of a 1968 Sweedich softore porn documentary) was a hit briefly. But no doubt the Muppets cover of the tune later in the 1970s made it much much more mainstream

Down the pub last night there was a band practising in the basement for their show tonight. I'll think I'll give it a miss as their track listing seemed to consist of 'Sweet Home Alabama', and 'Don't fear the Reaper' played constantly on repeat.
