    License Plate Quiz

BUN's plate thread reminded me of a fun little quiz that I put up a on a road-related message board a while back. Some will be easier than others.

What USA states/Canadian provinces (and territories) have current regular issue car plates with the following design elements?

    1) Recognizable person or persons

    2) A website URL

    3) Tree or trees of identifiable species, or unaltered parts thereof

    3) Non-tree plant or plants of identifiable species, or unaltered parts thereof

    4) Bird or birds in flight

    5) A weather phenominon

    6) A bridge

    7) A geographical outline of the state, province or territory

    8) Sailboat or sailboats (can include ocean-going sailing ships)

    9) Agricultural stuctures, implemants or equipment

    10) Non-human mammal or mammals of identifiable species

    11) State/provincial/territorial flag, or unique elements thereof

    12) Star or stars

    13) Geological formations

    14) Aborigional art/artifacts

    15) The Sun

    16) Nothing besides simple text (state/province/territory name and motto) and the letters and numbers

    Enjoy!

Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.

Va has almost if not all of those. I have never seen a state with SO MANY types of plates
"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." Ben Franklin

Remember this motto to live by: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO- HOO what a ride!'"

The first two are correct, but Wyoming's cowboy is a generic person, not identifiable by name/face.

Florida seems to be even worse in that regard, but for the purposes of this thread, I am looking for what you get when you just pay the fee and ask for the basic, generic issue plates.

Most are correct, but I don't know if you can actually define the species of the trees on the Vermont tags.

Couldn't the very design of North American license plates include Colorado and Wyoming as answers the number 7?
You get all squeezed up inside/Like the days were carved in stone/You get all wired up inside/And it's bad to be alone

You can go out, you can take a ride/And when you get out on your own/You get all smoothed out inside/And it's good to be alone

Nevada has the Sierra Nevada Mountains on their current regular issue plates. That qualifies as a geological formation.

But I got the special issue plates with the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada" sign. They are awesome! And fund historic preservation! Yay!

#4 - Louisiana - new license plates feature the state bird - the pelican

Prior to that, the plates featured the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase, featuring an outline of the original boundaries of LA inside of a compass.

I thought the state bird was the mosquito...

#8 Texas had a sailboat between the letters and numbers, but they changed it to an outline of the state. So that really answers the question about a representation of the state on the license.

#6 Does CA still have the Golden Gate on their plates?

#14 Would the markings on the New Mexico plates count? And if aboriginal means Native American, the Oklahoma, too.

#2 Arizona (cactus) and Idaho (evergreen)

    #3 Georgia (peach!), Kansas (wheat)

#10 Maine (lobster - at least it used to)

    #11 Alaska and DC

#12 The old Texas plates, and the DC plates have stars

We also have a space ship and a cowboy on the plates. So in total, Texas currently has
    1) outline of the state
    2) non-agricultural item
    3) person (we all know that the cowboy really represents the DALLAS COWBOYS, right?)

"We do not need any other Tutankhamun's tomb with all its treasures. We need context. We need understanding. We need knowledge of historical events to tie them together. We don't know much. Of course we know a lot, but it is context that's missing, not treasures." - Werner Herzog, in Archaeology, March/April 2011

Nope. Just plain old boring white plates with nothing on them but the # and the state name. But California is written in pretty cursive writing...

    2) Pennsylvania has the state web site address along the bottom of it's ugly tag.
    3) South Carolina has an image of a palmetto tree on it's standard issue tag
    4) Maine's tag has some type of bird perched on a pine branch
    7) Florida has a state outline on it's tag
    9) Iowa has a grain silo and barn
    12) Alabama has the stars that "fell on" it. Whatever that means.
    13) Idaho's tag features an image of the Rocky Mts.
    15) Kentucky with it's acid trip looking smiley faced sun. Stay away from the bluegrass
    16) Virginia with it's plain white tag.

    That's all I've got.

That, and just about anything else you would want.

It's a toss-up between that and the flying cockroach.

Adding to what others have answered...

    2) A website URL
Indiana has a URL on their plates.

    3) Tree or trees of identifiable species, or unaltered parts thereof
    Oregon

    13) Geological formations
Both Oregon and Washington have mountains on their plates.

    15) The Sun
We've never seen it in Oregon!

OTOH, aren't the current North American plates a bit on the long side to be accurate renditions of the state outlines of Colorado and Wyoming???

OTOH, the 'fancy' plate with the Mackinac Bridge is not the regular issue, you have to specifically request it. Just ask for 'plates' and Michigan will give you those generic white-on-dark blue ones that full under the definition of #16.
