    Michigan Laefest Discussion Thread.

After seeing all the pictures of other Laefest’s I would like to propose a Laefest held Saturday June 18 a Bell’s Beer Garden in Kalamazoo.

    I'm available.

Depending on who attends if there are outta towners who are not familiar with K-zoo maybe we could take a walk downtown. Check out some of the things going on like:

The Downtown Movie theater, retail, residential development, and
    New Festival site

We would check out the First Pedestrian Mall that was opened to traffic a few year ago and some of the buildings which now contain loft apartments.

Bells has live music that night, GOAT MOTOR (Blues, Jazz, Jam Band, Fusion, Blues, Jazz, Jam Band, Fusion).

cover is $3.00 and the band starts at 9:30pm

I would suggest getting to Bell's early enough to avoid the cover and have one of their yummy black bean burittos.

Good Call. If we walk it we can also stop into Kraftbrau for one on our way to Bells!

From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
    Is also great
    And would suffice.

People will miss that it once meant something to be Southern or Midwestern. It doesn't mean much now, except for the climate. The question, “Where are you from?” doesn't lead to anything odd or interesting. They live somewhere near a Gap store, and what else do you need to know? - Garrison Keillor

Had hoped to be able to attend, but will be in Quebec City that weekend. Of the only 2 weekends I have plans all summer you chose 1.

Only other weekend that is booked as of right now for me is the 25 of June.

As for location, closer to Canadian border work best for me.

Maybe if it was in Detroit or a similar locale, we could convince BUN and SAC to come?

Hmmm maybe a weekend in Ann Arbor or the 313 (Detroit). As for dates, I will be gone on the 4 and 11 to the UP. So anything other than those dates will work for me.

Who would be interested in the D or Ann Arbor?

Would this be easier with a poll???? I am not available the 4th or the 11th either. The 18 and 25 works awesome because my family is down here on vacation and can babysit

Kzoo, Lansing, A2 are all about an hour from me, so they all work. I'd invite you all down to Coldwater, which is actually quite central, but this is a LOT different atmosphere from the city. Lots of lakes (but don't have a boat, but could always rent one), farms and a lot of hole in the wall bars (which are actually quite fun).

Also, what time are we looking at? For folks that have to drive further, maybe we could do a lunch with walking tour later, and then those that want to stay can.

Hey, we're geographers - let's nail down a date first and find out who's available. Then use central place theory weighted for each participants' location.....and we'll probably end up in Hillsdale or some such!

Well, you know what...my brother in-law will be in Ann Arbor sometime in mid to late June and we were going to visit him, so I could possibly be available for a laefest.

I'll get back with the dates.

Sounds fun! Any weekend in June works, but prefer not to have it the weekend of the 10th as I may have company coming into town.

    Laefest in A2 sounds fun!!!!

Ok... so it sounds like Ann Arbor is a go! (most people say that is possible and it will make my GF happy because she is a U of M grad)
Who can be there on the 18th of June?

Any U of M grads in the house?

If it's in Ann Arbor or the Detroit area, it might be a possibility for me to make it as well. Weather permitting, it would be an easy three and a half hour drive. However, I'd have to stay someplace overnight so I can sober up before I head back; preferably someplace cheap, dog-friendly and as far from Oakland County as possible. (OC women always do me wrong, and I want to minimize the chances of encountering them.)

    Me....undergrad and grad.

I could think of some nice walking tours if I can attend the event.

Yes, this Bear can grace your presence with a trip to A-Squared on June 18th. My stem cells are down a quart and I can go back to the U of M Cancer Center and get a fill-up. NOT!

Keep posting the details. I will have samples of De Noc in my car to prove one (1) of two (2) things to you.....

This place might be a great place to meet up. I have never been there but always have wanted.

    It is Leopold Brothers Brewery

This is what the website says:
Two brothers, one a German-educated brewer and the other an environmental engineer, set out to create the world's first environmentally sustainable brewery. In so doing, they hoped to quench the thirsts of today's beer drinkers without limiting the ability of future generations to do the same.
It looks like they mostly sell lagers, no ales. Does that disqualify then for a laefest?

I think I could do the 18th in AA if there are activities during the day. As a family guy, I would have to be home by a decent hour.

Not too far... I have done this drive in 90 minutes before. (it was the one time that 94 was not controlled by semi-truck drivers)

So it looks like we have a location, and date. What time does the place that PBD recommended open up? Or does anyone have any other suggestions for a location to meet up at?
