Michigan Chapter of the APA (ASB Kansas APA Chapter)

Did any of the other Michigan Planners notice that the Michigan Society of Planning is now the Michigan Association of Planning? I am on one of the committees and all of a sudden all of the e-mails now say MAP instead of MSP?

What is up with the change, and will they ever update the website?

They announced it in one of their last magazines. Their thinking is that 'society' has a negative connotation, and that they are really an association. In addition, MSP is trademark Michigan State Police. I personally like MAP better.

When you say update their website, are you talking their name or EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF INFORMATION on the darn thing? That is so irritating - I don't think it has been updated since Sept or Oct. Their 2005 training schedule, current legislation, etc. etc. I think you should email them

I was thinking about all the info, the feel, the name, and everything else. They do have some info on there about the conference, which is a huge step up from last year. The are even going to have some musical jam session, made up of planners with musical talent, based on a recommendation from "Rise of the Creative Class". I am not sure how I feel about that.

I like the change. Not too sure what spawned it besides the article in the MichiganPlanner magazine. New leadership = New Ideas. I think the MSP argument is lame. I seriously doubt anyone would confuse us with the Michigan State Police.

The chosen audience are the legislators in Lansing. Consider the power of the lobby for the Michigan State Police (MSP) and you will see how important it is to distinguish ourselves. The article that I read, the one referenced by SW MI Planner, stated there was some confusion in Lansing about who we are.

    Oh dear! From http://www.planningmi.org/events/conference.htm:

Remember - depending on interest we could have a Dixieland Band (complete with red garter arm bands and derbys), Rhythm & Blues, Rock-n-Roll, Latin, Rap, Jazz, or even a swing era big band. Singers are also being sought ..lead and backup. Itís up to you - the MSP members. You are welcome even if you havenít played in awhile because neither have we!
Michigan planners are such a groovy bunch of hip hipsters, huh?! Nothing's cooler than listening to an ad hoc group of Dixieland players complete with red garter arm bands and derbys playing at Mackinac Island.

Will the hotel rates be affordable on Mackinac Island for the conference ?
    Oddball
Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

Are you sure you're not hurt ?
No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.

WOW! I read that as SWINGERS (lead *and* backup) are being sought. I was almost excited for a moment

Your right, that is a big improvement, but I also want information about training, jobs, legislation, etc. I want an updated list of who the board is and what region they represent. I want to know for sure what the groups name is (MSP vs. MAP). I don't just want information about the conference. The conference isn't (and shouldn't) be the only reason they exist.

And for what its worth I think the jam session is stupid.

JNA - the rates are VERY reasonable. The conference rate is $60 - $100 cheaper per night than their regular rates, depending on category of room and single or double. Here is the conference rate, and here are the rates as listed on the Grand Hotel webpage.

All in all, we will be there! The husband and the baby might be coming with me, which cuts out the swinging (kidding). This is early, but we will have to schedule a laefest.

I recieved my first newsletter in months just a few weeks ago and did not notice any change. Maybe I need to be more observant? I've never attended the state conference, I guess its my own anti-elitism streak, but Mackinac? even at $60 off regular rates thats still some serious coin. I'd rather see it somewhere like Lansing or Battle Creek, you know, real cities with real problems.

The Traverse City conference invite made me laugh, bike trips and adaptive resuse of a theatre to a performing arts center? This is not exactly cutting edge stuff. I'd love to be more involved with our local chapter, but I don't think it sees things the same way and coddles more to the commissioners than the staff.

Yeah, and I'm not even enthralled one iota by the Grand Hotel. Heck, if I go, I'll probably get a Shack Motel in St Ignace just north of town by the casino. I'm sure it would only be about $45 and the $15 for the ferry trip wouldn't be so bad. And since it's after Labor Day, I bet the rates would be even cheaper.

There are a few lounges at the Grand and a few bars 'downtown'. The Pink Pony is one that comes to mind. Lets wait and see who all is going and where they are staying - it looks like 8pm is the latest the shuttle will run at night.

Wanigas? it looks like one round trip ticket is $17.50 for that time of year.

The best part of Mackinac Island is the boat ride, in my opinion. Yes, the island looks neat, but that whole "take a step back in time" feeling when you get there creeps me out. Plus, everything smells like road apples. Ugh.

A former UPer and you have never been to the Island.

Not sure if I'll be going. It is still early.

I know, I know... and being that I was born a Yooper, I will always be a yooper. I do have relatives that live in St. Ignace, and I have been there more weekends than I remember, but I have never taken the trip over to the Island.

I also like the name change and am also wishing they would update their website. I'm excited for the conference being at the Grand Hotel. Being from MI all my life and having attended school at Northern Michigan University, I've been to the Island many times, but never staying at the Grand. It should be a great time.

The first time I went to Mackinac Island, I was about five and my brother was 8. He gave me a road apple to eat. I said "this road apple tastes like $h!t" and my dad immediately washed my mouth out with soap. I thanked him.

It is too early to call RE: Attendance. Grand Rapids was a fun time last year and Kalamazoo was good too. Mackinac can get a little expensive, even with the cheap rooms. Especially if you are driving from the south end of the state. 5 hours in the car each direction. Ouch.

Great place to visit and since it is low season, the island wont' be full of fudgies. It is even nicer when the last of the tourists disappear from the island via the ferry and the whole place settles down. Head up if you get the chance.

I am working on getting permission and funding for it. It does not look all that good.

Gonna be there. It's been over 25 years since my last visit, which was a day trip, so I'm excited about the Grand. I'll be going up alone sans family, and since there is no need to drive once I get there, it just might be time for me to let my hair down...

As of today, it is official I will not be there. Can not justify cost for a one-day trip, not enough funding for full conference.
