Goodbye, y'all. I'm off to California for the next couple weeks, spending some time in the Sierras before heading to the International Economic Development Conference in Oakland. It'll be nice to get away for a while, but I will miss my daily Cyburbia fix.
Speaking as one who recently underwent a two week cyburbia withdrawl, all I can say is - Good luck!

Sorry you didn't see more bears (though far away is the way I like to see them). I'm learning more bear lore now that I am closer to my wife's relatives in Western MA, which has seen a lot of black bears this year.
According to them, you can tell the type of bear pretty easily if you remember the following:
If you climb a tree, and the bear climbs up after you and eats you, it's a black bear.
If you climb a tree, and the bear knocks down the tree and eats you, it's a grizzly.
See any more wildlife, etc. while you were out there?

I have a thing with bears. One week in Montana I saw seventeen. I once spoke with a woman in Washington State who had lived there three years without seeing even one. I had to tell her I saw four in the last 24 hours. I have been as close as ten feet away from them - a mother and cubs even - without any problems. That's not to say I'm not cautious or careful, but then they have not been perturbed either. A psychic once told me I was a bear in a past life....
As for other wildlife, one elk, many deer, several eagles, and too many squirrels to count.
The sierras are certainly beautiful. Add to that the "lost coast" south of Eureka.
I snapped a few pics of some of the towns out there as well, which I will post once I have them developed. Kudos, especially to Downieville (28' street through the downtown, with parking, and a one-lane bridge on the state highway) and Fernville (wonderful Victorians). Also the ghost town of Bodie.
Did you get down south of Yosemite? My parents have a cabin backing up to national forest outside of Oakhurst, CA. I love most of the towns along highway 49 that runs up and down the Sierras west side. I'm jealous you got to visit my childhood playground! I hope I get a chance to get back there soon myself.

I was there in January. But I did drive 49 from Mariposa to its end in the north. Mostly nice old mining towns, except a few have been eaten up by suburban sprawl.
Yeah... places like Placerville and Auburn aren't as quaint as I remember them from my youth. But the area around Calaveras is still gorgeous. Like you said... Downieville did a great job, as did many of the other northern Sierra towns (well, at least on the west side).Originally posted by Michael Stumpf
