>From Jonna Higgins-Freese:
1000 Friends of Iowa is trying to gather enough interested people to send
one or two carloads of Iowa participants to the New Partners for Smart
Growth conference, to be held January 26-28 in Denver, CO. Last year, only
Jonna and one city staff member from Ankeny represented Iowa at the meeting
- not a very good showing! Whether your interest is transportation,
mixed-use development, infill, low-income housing, green space preservation,
policy, or practically any other land-use related subject under the sun,
this is the place for you! Last year, the tours of model development alone
were worth the price of admission.
The program will include a dynamic mix of keynotes, plenaries, interactive
breakout sessions, "hands-on" implementation workshops, and opportunities
for participants and speakers to network with each other. It will also
feature several optional sessions, including pre- and postconference tours
of local model projects, preconference seminars, and evening salon sessions..
This is a great opportunity for local elected officials, local government
staff, planners, transportation professionals, traffic engineers,
developers, builders, realtors, architects, landscape architects, public
heath and injury prevention professionals, , law enforcement/crime
prevention professionals, urban designers, lending institutions, parks and
recreation professionals, bicycle and pedestrian advocates, advocates for
youth and older adults, affordable housing and social equity advocates,
educators, and other environmental professionals and citizen activists.
The program will feature cutting-edge smart-growth issues, the latest
research, implementation tools and strategies, successful case studies,
interactive learning experiences, new partners, new projects, and new
