    Nothing's Over....

Just when you thought you saw the last of our former sorry excuse for a president, I just read in the paper this morning that he and his cronies are filing for almost $8 million (to be paid by taxpayers) for reimbursement for his legal bills in regards to the impeachment trial and Whitewater.

I'm sorry, but I just feel that this is a blatant slap in the face to the taxpayers of America. He hired lawyers that most of us wold never be able to afford in order to get him off, and now we are expected to foot the bill.

    Rant over :@

I am a lot less upset about that than I am at the 70-80 million dollars of taxpayer money that was used for the Whitewater investigation, which somehow ended up becoming an investigation into Clinton's sexual life.

I'm not pleased that we elected the buffoon in the first place. If we hadn't we would have saved the expense of the legal defense plus the expense of the investigation and the national embarrassment on top of all that...

But alas we can have more of all that, there's another Clinton lurking...

I would be nice if the democrats or the republicans ran someone who was actually qualified to be president....but all of those people are either too smart to run or don't want to take a pay cut.

Clinton was a sleazy lying condescending embarassment and GW is a bufoon who only got in on his name....oh and because some idiots in Fla are too dumb to work a voting card. Not that Gore would be any better.

    Read it - Flushed it.

I dispise Jim Hightower and his populist middle of the road swill. No, really, I do. But I like you Runner.

PS In a perfect world Clinton would be coming up for parole about now and someone who could talk would be Prez!

BTW - Florida Voter - I crack myself up!

WE??? Speak for yourself...I have voted for Bush, Bush, Dole, and Bush. And don't mention the ridiculous people who consider themselves "republicans" by voting for Perot. All they did was divide the Republican vote and lose the election for Bush. That's why Slick Willie was elected, the Republicans weren't unified.

Actually, by "we" I was referring to the country as a whole and not of individual voters.

I love Jim Hightower and his populist Swill. But I still love you, too, El Guapo

Someone has to be populist in a country that only months ago worshipped people like Ken Lay.

LEAVE ME OUT OF THIS ONE!

Well, the Hightower book that's sitting on my bathroom bookshelf is "There's Nothing in the Middle of the Road but Yellow Stripes and Dead Armadillos.," as recommended by bturk a while ago. Curmodgeony, left-leaning populism. I like it.
I'm staying out of this one so stop dragging me back in, and as for "middle of the road" I'm still debating if those are Wabbit Twacks or Twain Twacks.

Moderator's note: Uhhh ... what happened to my brilliant post? I didn't post about Wabbit Twacks, or say "LEAVE ME OUT OF THIS ONE!

    Hugs?

I love you all too! And I'll just bet you'all don't like P.J. O'Roarke as much as I do. So we will all have to agree to disagree and someday we will meet at Dan's Lil' Taste of Amsterdam Hash bar and talk about it!

Dan, I just know you're not claiming that this is only going on with conservative pundits. In fact, I think I could actually argue just as persuasively that the masters of the game are on the left.

You compare Ann Coulter to Goebbels. Fair enough. But the thing is, "conservatives," including me, are compared to Nazis - wait, actually CALLED Nazis - by the likes of Michael Moore, Jonathan Pilger, Robert Fisk, Susan Sontag, Noam Chomsky, et al on a frequent basis. After Timothy McVeigh bombed the Murrah Building, Bill Clinton all but actually blamed Republicans, Rush Limbaugh in particular, for creating the "climate" in which such an atrocity could take place.

I can tell you're a great guy who I'd love to have a beer with sometime, and even have a rip-roarin' political discussion with, and I'm not trying to shut a civilized discussion on this issue down. But I just can't muster much sympathy for the hurt feelings truly principled liberals might legitimately have over being lumped together by conservative pundits.

El Feo: How is this any different than Christian fundamentalists blaming them evil permissive queers and rock-n-roll music for September 11? At least liberals don't threaten their oponents with hellfire. Ann Coulter is at least as bad as many of the "liberal" pundits you mention.

And, I would point out that, to this liberal at least, Michael Parenti and Noam Chomski are hardly "liberals." They immediately blame the United States for everything, babble endlessly about "new paradigms" and "socialism." Chomsky et al are hardly liberals. Parenti spent hours babbling about how wonderful the Serbian Socialist Party of Slobodan was, for God's sake Zero credibility in my book, and I am definitely a lefty.

Michael Moore is nothing but a leftist Rush Limbaugh, with about as much deep thought and credibility. Good for amusement value, but that's about it.

I really doubt, also, that you will find many liberal pundits as downright nasty as many of the shock radio Uberstormtroopers of the Right. For example, a local video crew was filming a police operation in San Francisco (with the explicit cooperation of the Police themselves, by the way). Our local foamer (a really nasty cro-magnon conservative named "Michael Savage" came by and went into a roid rage. He ran up to the film crew and started screaming at them about how wicked they were, how they were oppressing the cops, etcetera ad nauseum.

I think we need to throw Ann Coulter, Savage, et al into a domed ring with PETA, the Animal Liberation Front, the professional Homeless Industry, and the various anarchist/trotskyite/
Workers' Party silly groups. They can fight to the death and then dine on the over-fed carcasses of Limbaugh and Michael Moore. THAT I would pay to see

    Blue Helmets needed here?

BKM is right. We do tend to lump everyone left of our personal position in the all-inclusive term of Liberal. And that is not fair, just as having the network news give David Bonnier press coverage when he is screaming Republicans want to starve children and old folks is very biased. We notice the insults aimed at us. The other guy's are just what they deserved. And in dealing with the grander perspective of Liberal v. Conservative-we are not going to solve it here.

Hopefully I and other conservatives have helped explain why we think a certain way on certain issues, and I know I have learned and even modified a few of my postions based upon my contact with you Leftist Bastards.

    A Kumbaya Moment

BKM: It's absolutely no different. Period. That's my point, see? Stupidity is rampant on the fringes of both sides, and there's not a dime's worth of distance between far left and far right. Stalin and Hitler hated each other so viciously because they were scrapping over the same moral turf (communism and fascism - the twin worn out hand-me-downs of western political theory); from a practical political perspective they just weren't that different.

I do disagree, however, that "ours" are any more nasty than "yours." We'll just have to agree to disagree on that point , I suspect.

However, your broader point is right. As some of my best friends are rabid liberals (no-really! I live in Massachusetts and can't afford to be too picky ) I need to develop a system to see the world a bit less black-and-white sometimes.

SO - here's a modest proposal. I'll take Parenti, Chomsky, Fisk, Sontag, and assorted radicals off my list of liberals. You take Falwell, Robertson, Michael Savage (sorry, never heard of him) and like reactionaries off your list of conservatives.

Let's keep Paul Begala and Ann Coulter on our lists, just as a reminder and because the fits they cause each others' opponents amuse me.

El Feo: I'll certainly grant you your points. They are the same. After all, there were really at least two or three holocausts this century. The left doesn't like to talk about the millions killed by the "peoples' govenments.

Fundamentalist true believers are much the same in their willingness to sacrifice others in the name of their political (or religious) purities.

Hopefully, tolerance for fanaticism will decline.
Happily, even in uber-radical Berkeley, the silly left posters of the Workers Party and similar groups are quickly defaced whenever they appear! (I've defaced a few myself, I must admit)
