``Kill a yuppie'' graffiti being sprayed in Somerville have police and city residents on alert.
The threats are cropping up in toddler parks, businesses and libraries.
``We're very concerned with some of the words that are being put up,'' police Lt. Paul Upton said of the vandalism outbreak around Davis Square.
Public works crews are scrambling to sandblast the yuppie-hating messages away, but the hatred may not be so easy to erase.
Danny McLaughlin, 23, said the ``kill a yuppie'' message started recently among neighborhood kids because blue-collar and immigrant families have been ``priced out'' of Somerville by increasing property values.
``(Those kids') lives aren't getting any better,'' he said. ``It's getting them angry that newcomers don't recognize the real issues.''
John L. Sullivan, a candidate for alderman, said the city needs to offer youth programs to give kids something to do other than frighten residents.
