    How to stop a Wal-Mart

The Wally World monster is trying to gobble up our nice little resort town (of 3500 residents) on the Alabama Gulf Coast. They've purchased the land, filled some wetlands (illegally), and now the G.D. USACE won't give the town a "public meeting" to comment on the wetlands the Corps says they may be able to fill (I know, it's confusing..). Anyway, would any of you have any sources for other communities who've tried to fight Big Box retailers moving into their community. We are grass roots, not planners, but we need some frickin' help. PLEASE!

    How to Stop a Wal-Mart

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has published a citizen's guide to fighting big box retailers. It's by Canstance Beaumont, "superstore sprawl" is in the title, I think. 1996. It is also available from the American Planning Association's planners press at www.planning.org.
