My architecture students are designing homes for hypothetical families. One student drew a family that has a single mom, and two teenage children in Boise, Idaho. She only makes 23,000 a year as a teacher and has no savings, can she afford to build or buy a house. What kind of housing programs are out there for limited income families?
USDA, Rural Development (formerly Farmers Home Administration)operates the Rural Housing Loan Program that provides financial assistance to people in rural areas for purchasing and building homes. To qualify for assistance, applicants must be unable to obtain credit from usual commercial credit sources. The loan terms are generally more favorable than from a commercial lender. You should contact your local Rural Development Office for details. I know they also have certain home design requirements. The application period is continuous.
